66ers Drop Series Opener at Visalia 7-2

Visalia, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino fell 7-2 on Friday night at Visalia in the opener of at three-game set versus the Rawhide, the top club in the California League. The Rawhide (20-9) held the Sixers down until the ninth when Inland Empire (14-15) pushed across two unearned runs with two down in the ninth.

Visalia scored a run in the second on Luis Basabe's RBI single. The Rawhide tacked on two more in the fourth when IE pitcher Cooper Criswell (0-3) hit a batter and then gave up an RBI triple to Yoel Yonqui. Basabe's groundout scored Yonqui for a 3-0 advantage. The Rawhide added four more in the fifth highlighted by Renae Martinez' 3-run homer of IE reliever Kyle Bradish. It was Martinez' fourth round-tripper of the campaign. Matt Mercer (1-0) started for Visalia and threw six shutout frames giving up two hits, two walks and striking out eight. The 66ers did not get a runner to third base until the ninth when Ryan Scott singled and moved to third on a double by Leonardo Rivas against Visalia reliever Justin Vernia (SV, 1). Vernia had tossed two prior perfect frames. With two outs Torii Hunter Jr. reached on a two-base throwing error by Basabe that allowed the Sixers' runs to come home. Inland Empire would get closer.
