San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls announced Wednesday that they will officially donate $6,000 to victims of the Southeast Asia Tsunamis, which struck in late December. There will be a formal check presentation to the San Diego Rescue Task Force prior to the Gulls' March 19 game against the Las Vegas Wranglers.

Through various programs in January, the Gulls and their fans were able to raise the $6,000 donation.

The most popular fundraiser the Gulls held was their boxer shorts auction, which ran on their web site. Special pairs of Gulls boxer shorts, courtesy of Coast-to-Coast Tax Service, were given away to the first 6,000 fans in attendance for the Saturday, Jan. 15 game against the Louisiana IceGators. For the auction, each Gulls player and coach autographed a pair of boxer shorts.

Other fundraising programs included a team autograph session, "Chuck-A-Puck" sales, ticket sales contributions and general fan monetary donations.

A special team autograph session was held on Saturday Jan. 8 after the Gulls took on the Fresno Falcons. All fans who donated at least $10 were able to participate in the post-game activity.

For a selected number of games in January, the Gulls donated a portion from every Terrace ticket purchased. They also donated half of the proceeds from the "Chuck-A-Puck" sales. Up until the second intermission of every home game, fans can buy a rubberized puck for $1 to throw onto the ice, in an effort to win a prize.

During the same selected games, collection bins were stationed throughout the Sports Arena.

"This was such a terrible disaster and the effects will be felt throughout Southeast Asia for a long time," Gulls Chief Operating Officer Tera Black said. "I'm just glad that the San Diego Gulls were able to help and provide some relief. It's a real tribute to our great fans, who are always willing to help those in need.

"Last year it was the San Diego fire victims. This year it was the Tsunami victims. And every year they help United Cerebral Palsy through our ‘Tip-A-Gull' event. We of course wish these disasters never happened, but I and the entire organization know that our fans will always be there to help and give their support."
