Defending Champions Continue Kelly Cup Playoffs Quest
March 9, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL schedule on Thursday has a West Division dual between Idaho and Victoria and an East Division match-up between Columbia and Pee Dee. Idaho is continuing its quest to make the Kelly Cup Playoffs, so it can defend its ECHL title while Victoria is playing the second game of its final three-game home stand before embarking on a season-ending 12-game road trip. Columbia has finished first in its division each of the past two seasons but is five points behind Charlotte in the East while Pee Dee is seven points out of the eighth and final postseason berth in the American Conference.
Heading into Wednesday's game at Bear Mountain Arena, Idaho had won the last five meetings with the Salmon Kings and led the series 5-1-0, including 2-0-0 at Victoria. The Steelheads began the week tied with San Diego for fifth place, seven points behind Fresno which currently holds the fourth and final playoff spot in the West Division. In its inaugural season, Victoria entered Wednesday's game looking to end a six-game losing streak and hoping to improve its 7-24-2 home record. The two close out the series with a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
Tuesday saw Columbia lose 2-1 at Gwinnett while Pee Dee lost 4-2 at Charlotte. The Inferno is 0-2-1 at Pee Dee and 4-2-1 overall against the Pride, who has won its last two home games to improve to 18-8-2 at home. Pee Dee beat Columbia 3-2 in a shootout on February 18 to improve to 3-0-0 at home and 3-4-0 overall against the Inferno.
