300 Game Man Wins Honour

Brandon, Manitoba - Tip Top Tailors, in conjunction with the Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that February's Player of the Month winner is 20-year old defencemanBrodie Melnychuk.

A 5-year Western Hockey League veteran, the Balgonie, Saskatchewan product enters the final month of regular season play in his career, having become one of only eight players in franchise history to play in 300 career games.

Entering Friday night's game against the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes, Melnychuk is tied withAaron Goldade for fourth place on the club's all time list for games played with 310. When the former third round bantam draft pick takes to the ice to meet the 'Canes this weekend, he will be moving into a third place tie with former captainTim Konsorada.

With two games this weekend, Melnychuk will enter the second to last week of regular season play on Monday having seen action in 312 games and leaving onlyLance Monych (319) and current assistant coachDwayne Gylywoychuk (323) having played more.

In twelve games this month, Melnychuk has two goals and four points and finished among the club leaders with an impressive +9 plus / minus ranking. In 51 games this season, the 6'3.5" 204 lb blueliner has five goals, 16 points and is +16, which leaves him tied with Michael Ferland for third place on the team behind Mark Stone and Ryan Pulock.

During his five years in Brandon, Melnychuk has 22 goals, 91 points and 155 career penalty minutes.

Brodie becomes the third Wheat Kings' defenceman to win the Tip Top monthly honour this season, joiningEric Roy(November) andRyan Pulock (January). The other two winners this season were captainMark Stone (September / October) and former Saskatoon Blades' left-winger Darian Dziurzynski(December).

While Stone currently leads the club and is second in league scoring with 105 points, including 39 goals in 58 games, Dziurzynski enters the weekend needing just four more games to reach the 300-game plateau.

In recognition of the monthly honour, Melnychuk will receive a shirt, tie and suit from Tip Top Tailors in the Shoppers Mall, the official menswear clothier of the Wheat Kings, during Friday's game against the Hurricanes.

The Wheat Kings, who compiled an impressive 9-2-0-1 record in February, are currently one point back of the seventh place Regina Pats and two behind sixth place Saskatoon in the WHL's Eastern Conference.
