Daytona Tortugas News Release
Daytona Beach, FL - After 7 1/2 innings of scoreless baseball, the Daytona Tortugas (38-25, 75-58) broke through with a decisive three-run eighth inning rally to take down the Brevard County Manatees (26-38, 55-78) 3-0 on Friday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
DH Sebastian Elizalde led off the eighth inning with a double down the left field line, and LF Daniel Pigott followed with a frozen rope over the left fielder's head, good for an RBI double and a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, CF Jeff Gelalich sliced a double to the gap in left center. He raced for third with a triple, and scored after Jose Pena bobbled the ball on the warning track. The 3-0 lead was more than enough for RHP Alejandro Chacin (W, 2-0) who picked up four strikeouts and a double play across two scoreless innings to close it out.
Limited to 80 pitches in advance of next week's playoffs, RHP Jackson Stephens made the most of his five innings. He worked around three singles and a double with three strikeouts and no walks, wrapping up his regular season with a 12-7 record and a 2.97 ERA.
Brevard County's only threat came in the second inning, when Taylor Brennan reached third with one out. Rafael Neda hit a hard chopper to third base, and 3B Taylor Sparks caught Brennan in a rundown along the third base line with a 5-2 fielder's choice.
Manatees starter Cy Sneed was phenomenal from the get-go, recording seven of his first nine outs with Ks. Daytona stranded a pair of baserunners in the second and fourth innings, and Sneed finished after seven shutout frames with just four hits and three walks allowed while racking up a career-high 10 strikeouts. Daytona put together the eventual game-winning rally against Preston Gainey, who had entered the game with a 2.60 ERA.
RHP Carlos Gonzalez tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out two hitters and allowing just one hit, a two-out triple by Dustin Houle in the sixth inning.
