Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers battled back to tie the game twice on Friday night, but fell short in a 7-6 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays in 13 innings at Bright House Field.
Clearwater (40-25) trailed 5-4 in the ninth inning with two men on and two men out, before pinch-hitter Willians Astudillo rolled a grounder to second for what should have ended the game.
Instead, the ball was mishandled by second baseman Christian Vazquez for an error, allowing Chace Numata to score the tying run.
After the Blue Jays (29-36) pushed home the go-ahead again in the 11th thanks to three walks and an error, the Threshers again found themselves facing their final three outs.
This time, Mitch Walding got things going with a single, and Malquin Canelo followed by ripping a triple to left to score Walding and tie the game at six.
The game remained knotted up into the 13th.
After Yacksel Rios (6-5) induced a pair of grounders to start the inning, Anthony Alford chopped an infield single toward short to put the go-ahead run on base, and Dickie Joe Thon followed with a single through the right side.
LB Dantzler walked to load the bases, and a passed ball charged to Chace Numata on the first pitch to Matt Dean permitted what would be the winning run to cross.
Walding and Canelo led the offense on Friday, combining for five hits and four RBIs. Walding doubled, tripled, and finished 3-for-5 with a walk, while Canelo launched his third homer in a Threshers uniform on his way to going 2-for-6 with a season-high four runs batted in.
John Richy made his second start in a Threshers uniform, but would not factor in the decision. After holding Dunedin scoreless through four innings, he would ultimately be charged with four runs on six hits in 5.2 frames, and did not issue a walk while striking out seven.
Clearwater will be back home on Saturday for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Fan Appreciation Night, with the largest fireworks sow in Bright House Field history to follow the game. David Whitehead (8-11) will toe the rubber for the Threshers, and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 p.m.
Playoff tickets are on sale now as Clearwater will host Daytona in game two of the Florida State League North Championship series on Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m. Fans can purchase seats here, at the Threshers Box Office, or by calling 727-467-4457.
