TL1 Midland RockHounds

'27 Yankees Defeat the Cardinals

May 26, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

Babe Ruth (correction, Matt Chapman) hit a pair of home runs and the Yankees (correction, RockHounds) added a pair of solo shots from Tyler Marincov and John Nogowski to defeat the Springfield Cardinals, 5-2 on Wednesday night at Hammons Field.

Chapman opened the scoring with a monster shot that departed the ballpark over the left field bullpen in the top of the first. After Yairo Munoz led off the fourth with a single, and with the 'Hounds still leading, 1-0, "Chappy" ripped a two-run shot to left-center. Two pitches later, Tyler Marincov made it back-to-back jacks with a line drive out to left. John Nogowski capped the scoring with a solo shot of his own to left field in the fifth. The "arithmetic" was pretty basic - - - the RockHounds' five runs came on five swings of the bat, four of them leaving the yard.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, had multiple scoring chances (they were retired in order only once in the game), but left 13 men on base.

The RockHounds

... are 24-21 (12-10 at Security Bank Ballpark and 12-11 on the road) ... have won four of their last five ... have won the first two games of the series at Springfield and the six-game road trip ... are 9-5 versus the North Division.

... continue their six-game road trip on Thursday night at Hammons Field in Springfield in game three versus the Cardinals at 7:10 p.m. The club then travels to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a three-game weekend series with the Tulsa Drillers (Double-A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers) at ONEOK Field. The 'Hounds return to Security Bank Ballpark on Tuesday, May 31, to open a six-game homestand.

Kibbles & Bits

STAT of the DAY Another day, another close game, although a three-run margin is a "borderline blowout" by recent RockHounds standards. Wednesday's three-run decision marked the 17th time in 18 games that the 'Hounds have been involved in a contest decided by three runs or fewer (14 of them decided by one or two runs). The 'Hounds did not go to extra innings Wednesday, newsworthy in itself after the club had gone "overtime" in six of their last eight games and eight times in its last dozen games.

- Ben Bracewell allowed three runs in his second appearance with the RockHounds (May 2 versus San Antonio). In seven outings since then, Bracewell (who earned the save on Wednesday night) has given up one run in 13.2 innings (a 0.66 ERA).

- Tyler Marincov hit his first home run at the Double-A level, a solo shot going back-to-back with Matt Chapman in the fourth inning Wednesday night. The homer extended his hitting streak to five games, a stretch in which he is 10-for-22 (.455).

- Danny Oh left Tuesday's game after a brilliant, diving catch on the warning track off the bat of Bruce Caldwell in the first inning. Oh initially stayed in the game (he singled to left and was part of a double steal that resulted in the RockHounds' first run of the game in the top of the second), but did not return to the field for the last half of the second inning. In making the catch, on a full speed dive onto the warning track, the 'Hounds right fielder sustained multiple bruises and scrapes and what was described as a "Charley Horse" to the right quad (it was the latter that forced him from the game). While not in the starting lineup, he took part in all pregame activities Wednesday.
