Alex Huang is a new-generation defenseman that Joël Perrault, his head coach with the St-Eustache Vikings, has labelled as the best skater in Quebec's U18 AAA Development Hockey League this year. Huang is fun to watch and, while his game has a ton of offensive upside, he is also very responsible defensively.
The 15-year-old rookie from Rosemère, Quebec finished the latest regular season as the top-scoring blueliner in LHM18AAAQ with an impressive tally of 40 points in 42 games. A player of his age is rarely able to produce at that pace, but Perrault isn't surprised by his prospect's superb campaign because he possesses all the tools that lead to success.
"Alex has been the quarterback of the St-Eustache Vikings this season. He is a defenseman blessed with an excellent skating stride, who loves to get involved in all game situations," explained Katerine Aubry-Hébert, Scout for the QMJHL's CSR. "His above-average vision allows him to be a threat in the offensive zone. He plays with confidence and distributes the puck well to his teammates. Huang will need to continue to gain strength and improve his physical game, but he will definitely be a defenseman to watch in the upcoming draft."
Along with two of his Vikings teammates, the defenseman recently helped Team Quebec win a bronze medal at the Canada Winter Games that were held in Prince Edward Island. Just like he had done all season, Huang was able to distinguish himself against some stiff competition from his peers throughout the event.
With the 2023 QMJHL Draft just a few months away, Perrault, who suited up for 96 NHL games during his playing days, is well-placed to recognize Huang's talent and the intangibles that will allow him to excel as he continues to climb the hockey ranks.
"He is extremely studious of the game. He is a very smart guy who gets very good grades in school and he's very serious about the way he does things," said Perrault. "There's a nice maturity in his game as well, and I'm convinced that he's going to continue to progress in all facets. I'm fairly certain he's going to have a great career."
With that approach and with the season he's had, Huang is exactly the type of defenseman that every team wants. Already a popular name amongst the scouts heading into June's draft, he's likely near the top of many of their lists.
