Washington Mystics News Release

Washington, D.C. - The Washington Mystics will have the fifth overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft as determined by the draft lottery held today. The Minnesota Lynx secured the number one overall selection, followed by the Phoenix Mercury. The 2006 WNBA Draft will be held in April.

"We have been able to pick players in the draft such as Alana Beard and Temeka Johnson that have had an immediate impact on our team" said Mystics General Manager Linda Hargrove. "We look forward to getting a player that can contribute and help us return to the playoffs."

The Washington Mystics finished the 2005 season with a 16-18 record. In the 2004 WNBA Draft, Washington selected guard Alana Beard of Duke University. In 2005, with the sixth overall pick, the Mystics selected Temeka Johnson of Louisiana State University. Johnson was later named the 2005 WNBA Rookie of the Year.

The WNBA Lottery included the five teams that did not qualify for the 2005 WNBA Playoffs. The lottery establishes the order of selection for the first round of the draft, with the order of selection for the second and third rounds based on teams' regular-season finishes in 2005. The lottery is modeled after the lottery used in the NBA and is weighted to favor the teams with the poorer records.

The first-round order of selection for the teams that did not win one of the top three picks was be determined by inverse order of their respective regular-season records.
