Modesto Nuts News Release

Tomorrow, 2006 Modesto Nuts pitcher Franklin Morales will get his first ever playoff start against Phillies rookie Kyle Kendrick. Franklin Morales was the best pitcher on the Nuts roster in 2006. While in Modesto, Morales led the entire California League in strikeouts with 179. He also boasted a 10-9 record with an ERA of 3.68 which was the best in the Cal League. This season, Morales spent time at two different levels before finally reaching the Major Leagues. During the regular season, Morales pitched very well with a record of 3-2 and an ERA of 3.42 in 8 starts for the Rockies.

Morales' quick ascent to the Major Leagues is not common, however many feel that he is ready to make a huge impact for the Rockies in this postseason. Morales is a left-handed pitcher who often reaches the high 90's with his fastball and compliments it with a good curveball. The Venezuela native has been very good of late, winning three out of his last four starts for the Rockies. While Morales is still very young, he has shown that he can handle the pressure of the Major Leagues. Tomorrow's start will be the biggest of the 21 year old's baseball career as he will take on a daunting Phillies lineup that includes MVP candidate Jimmy Rollins and 2006 NL MVP Ryan Howard. You can listen to tommorw's game between the Rockies and Phillies live on AM 970 ESPN Radio. Pregame coverage starts at 11:35 am with first pitch at 12:07 pm.

Rockies Win Game 1 Against Phillies

On Wednesday, the Colorado Rockies beat the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1 of the 2007 National League Division Series 4-2. Two former Modesto Nuts saw action in a game that saw 22 combined strikeouts between the two teams. Former Nuts shortstop Troy Tulowitzki had an RBI in the game and former Nuts pitcher Manny Corpas came into the game in the bottom of the 9th to earn the save.

In a game that many baseball analysts projected to be a slugfest, the Rockies beat the Phillies with a combination of excellent pitching and timely hitting. The Rockies grabbed an early lead in the second inning with a Garrett Atkins double, a Yorvit Torrealba single and a bases loaded walk issued to Troy Tulowitzki. MVP candidate Matt Holiday later added a solo home run to account for the Rockies scoring. The Phillies scored on back-to-back home runs by Aaron Rowand and Pat Burrell, but that was all the Phillies would get as their offense was shackled by Rockies left-hander Jeff Francis. The Rockies never trailed in the game and only allowed 4 hits to a Phillies lineup known for being one of the best in the National League. The Rockies take a 1-0 series lead into Game 2 in Philadelphia. Game 3 will take place in Colorado.
