Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN---The Memphis RiverKings of the Central Hockey League announced today (Wednesday) that they have signed right winger Scott Young, a 16 year veteran of National Hockey League, to a Standard Players Contract. Young brings quite a hockey resume to the RiverKings. The 37 year-old native of Clinton, Massachusetts won Stanley Cup Championships in 1991 with the Pittsburgh Penguins and then again in 1996 with the Colorado Avalanche. In 1,102 career N.H.L. games, Young has 324 goals and 384 assists for 708 points. He was an unrestricted free agent who played with the Dallas Stars last season. And was inactive and unsigned because of the N.H.L. lockout.
"(Current RiverKings Defenseman) Ted Crowley and I are good friends. We are members of the same golf club in New England. We play golf together all the time and he talked to me about coming down here to play hockey" Young said. He and Crowley met each other when they both were trying out for the 1992 Olympic team.
"As it began to look more and more like there might not be an N.H.L. season, I began to get antsy to play competitive hockey" he said. Young has been working out to stay in shape and playing some hockey but not on an organized level. "I have been playing basically in some charity games, exhibitions and alumni games" he said. "I haven't played in a real game for awhile, so I will need to get back into game shape"
Young was chosen by the Hartford Whalers with the eleventh overall pick in the 1986 N.H.L. Entry Draft and has played for seven different N.H.L. clubs.
"We are thrilled that he wanted to play for us and serious about playing out the season" RiverKings head coach Mark Richards said. "This definitely upgrades our team. He brings proven goal scoring ability from the highest level of hockey. He should make everyone on our team better."
Along with Hartford, Dallas, Pittsburgh and Colorado, Young has played for Quebec, Anaheim and St. Louis in his N.H.L. career. His best season statistically was 2000-2001 with the Blues when he was tenth in the league with 40 goals to go with 33 assists.
As far as Young's expectations..."I don't know what to expect. I don't know a lot about the team or the league. I am just hoping to come in and help the team win hockey games."
Young passed his physical and will be in uniform and on the ice when the RiverKings host Bossier-Shreveport tomorrow night at 7:05.
To make room for Young, Memphis had to waive veteran Alexandre Mathieu.
