MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, used a dominant pitching performance from all hurlers Saturday, beating the Carolina Mudcats, 7-2, at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Striking out 16 batters, the Pelicans set a career high in the category. Luke Jackson struck out seven batters in five innings, picking up his fifth win to go to 5-1. Jimmy Reyes then K'd four in two innings while Jon Edwards made his A-Advanced debut, striking out the side in the eighth. Francisco Mendoza picked up two more K's in the ninth.

On offense the Pelicans scored once on an RBI single from Brett Nicholas in the third. The Birds took the lead in the fourth with two runs without the benefit of a hit. Vinny DiFazio was the first of four Pelicans hit by a pitch in the game, reaching to lead off the inning. Chris Grayson then walked and Eddy Garcia was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch brought home DiFazio and a Josh Richmond sac fly brought in Grayson. It was 3-2.

The Pelicans offense added four more runs in the sixth, an inning headlined by a leadoff homer from Grayson, his second with Myrtle and his 12th total. A two run single by Hanser Alberto and an RBI single by Nicholas capped the inning.

With the win Myrtle Beach goes to 32-23 and three games back of first place Winston-Salem. The Pelicans are five games ahead of Carolina for the last playoff spot in the Carolina League South.
