THE HILLCATS: The Hillcats lost to the Wilmington Blue Rocks last night 11-1...The Blue Rocks scored 10 runs in the second inning...RHP Aaron Northcraft (8-11) lasted just an inning and a third for the Hillcats, allowing nine runs, seven earned, and took the loss...The Hillcats lone run scored because of an error in third inning...It was 11-1 after the first three innings...The 'Cats are now 26-28 in the second half and are in second place in the Northern Division, 2.5 games out of first...
VS. WILMINGTON: Lynchburg is 7-8 against the Blue Rocks this season...The Blue Rocks and Carolina Mudcats (11-9) are the only two teams in the league with a winning record against the Hillcats...These two teams meet this week for the first time since July 6...Nine of the games have been decided by just one run...The Hillcats have won five of the one-run contests...Wilmington has the run advantage this season 70-57...
PELICANS, BLUE ROCKS, AND DASH OH MY!: With less than three weeks left in the regular season, the Hillcats only have the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Wilmington Blue Rocks, and Winston-Salem Dash left on the docket...The Dash (35-19) lead the Southern Division and the Pelicans (31-23) are four games behind them, while the Blue Rocks (28-25) sit in first place in the Northern Division...All three teams are set for the playoffs right now...
THE LONGEST INNING: The Blue Rocks scored 10 runs in the bottom of the second last night...It was the most runs by any Hillcats opponent in a single inning this year, surpassing the nine runs put up by the Potomac Nationals on July 24...Wilmington also sent 15 batters to the plate, passing the 13 that Potomac batted in their nine-run frame...
IT COULD'VE BEEN WORSE: Lynchburg lost by 10 runs last night, 11-1...It was their second-largest margin of defeat this season...The Nationals beat them 14-0 on July 16 at Pfitzner Stadium...The Nationals prior to last night had claimed the four worst losses for the Hillcats this season, including 10-1 July 24, 8-0 June 3, 11-4 April 13...Lynchburg's record in games after losing by seven or more runs is 2-2...
BUCKET LIST: RHP Gus Schlosser beat the Pelicans for the first time in four attempts Tuesday night...He has now beaten every team in the league, and has a the most wins in the circuit with 13...He gave up three earned runs in five innings last night and still sports a robust 7.48 ERA against the Pelicans this season...Meanwhile, he holds a 2.19 ERA against the rest of the league...Currently ranks fourth in ERA (3.07), first in innings pitched (149.1), third in strikeouts (122), fourth in WHIP (1.10), fourth in average against (.247), and third in lowest BB/9 IP ratio (1.57)...
STILL SEARCHING: RHP Aaron Northcraft has not won since he beat the Blue Rocks on July 4...He is 0-7 over eight starts since then...The Hillcats have scored 10 runs in those eight games, getting shut out twice...From July 26-August 12, Northcraft only allowed five earned runs in 23 innings (1.97 ERA), but still lost three times in four starts...He also allowed seven unearned runs in that span...Last night was his shortest outing of the season, getting just four outs (all on strikeouts)...He was charged with a season-high nine runs...Also committed his sixth error of the season, which is tied with RHP Tyler Sample, of Wilmington, for the most errors by a pitcher in the league this season...He is now 8-11 this season...The Hillcats are 8-16 when he starts...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Brooks Pounders was acquired by the Kansas City Royals with INF Diego Goris from the Pittsburgh Pirates for INF Yamaico Navarro on December 7, 2011...Goris is currently playing with the Rookie-level AZL Royals and Navarro started the year with Pittsburgh but is now with Triple-A Indianapolis...Pounders was originally drafted in the second round by the Pirates in 2009 out of Temecula Valley High School (CA)...Went 9-2 with a 1.96 ERA his senior year...Struck out 91 in 64.1 innings pitched...Put up a record of 10-10 with a 3.82 ERA over three years in the Pirates system...Made 61 appearances, 9 starts...Struck out 121 in 132 innings...Had advanced a level each season of his career, until repeating at Low-A to start the 2012 season...Went 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 12 games, 8 starts fro Kane County this year...Promoted to Wilmington June 9...His first mid-season promotion...He is 5-4 with a 4.83 ERA for the Blue Rocks in 13 appearances, 12 starts...Vs. Lynchburg, 5.2IP, 9H, 5ER, 3BB, 2K on July 6 in Lynchburg...
