Guelph Storm News Release
The Guelph Storm is proud to announce that $10,000 in net proceeds from the 20th Anniversary Alumni Game held in June will be donated to the Guelph Wish Fund for Children.
Founded by former NHL linesman Ron Asseltine, the Guelph Wish Fund for Children grants "wishes" to children 19 years of age and under, who have a serious or life- threatening illness, a severe handicap, or been critically injured.
"On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Guelph Wish Fund for Children, a sincere thanks to everyone with the "Storm", the organizing committee, the players, volunteers, and the fans, for making the Alumni game an enjoyable experience for everyone involved," Originator Ron Asseltine said.
"We are thankful for all the hard work that everyone put into the Alumni Weekend. It was great to have so many former players back and to be able to help out a charity that means so much to this community," Storm President Rick Hoyle said.
During the weekend of June 11th-13th, over 40 former Storm players re-visited the Royal City to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the team. The Storm would like to thank all fans that came out to celebrate with the weekend of events.
The Guelph Wish Fund for Children will consider a "wish" for any deserving child who qualifies under the guidelines and mission statement of the charity. Referrals for assistance come from family members, doctors and nurses, teachers, friends, and co-workers of families of children who are going through these stressful times. The charity always respects the dignity and feelings of the child and family, and willingly grants anonymity to those families seeking its services.
The Guelph Wish Fund for Children celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2009. All of those connected with the charity will remember the children they helped, and measure the success enjoyed in the children's smiles, and the memories they carry with them.
The Guelph Wish Fund for Children granted its first "wish" in May 1985. A more recent "wish" was in April 2010. To date, the charity has raised over 2.5 million dollars, and has been involved with 245 children and their families. Some of the children's "wishes" have been for assistance to make treatments a little easier. Others have required a lot more work and planning. All have been worth the joy and hope brought to the "wish" kids and their families.
