Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
LINCOLN - For the first time since November 5, the Dubuque Fighting Saints have lost a game in regulation time. The Lincoln Stars topped the Saints 5-1 at the Ice Box on Friday night, which snapped the team's five-game winning streak, and streak without a regulation loss.
Christian Krygier untied the game with a snap shot from the point early in the third period to start the momentum slide. It took until the latter stages for Dominick Mersch to score the first of his two goals to extend the lead to 3-1, and then 5-1 with less than 30 seconds to go in the game.
Sam Sternschein's empty-net goal put the game away for good in the final minute.
Dubuque tied the game against Lincoln goaltender Derek Schaedig, in his first USHL start on an emergency basis, thanks to Colin Theisen late in the second period. Cole Guttman stripped the puck away along the half wall and moved into the high slot. His initial shot was turned away by Schaedig, but Theisen pulled a backhander through the five hole to tie the game up at one.
Stars captain Dylan Woolf started the scoring at the 12:15 mark of the second period with a point shot through traffic that eluded Saints goaltender Evan Fear, who got his second start in a Dubuque uniform.
Both teams went 0-for-2 on their respective power play opportunities. Neither team got a power play opportunity past the first minute of the second period when Dallas Gerads' slashing minor expired.
Friday night's game marked the first time that the Fighting Saints were held to one goal or fewer since a 1-0 win over the Green Bay Gamblers on November 12.
The Fighting Saints return to action on Saturday, December 10 against Dupaco Cowbell Cup rival Waterloo at Young Arena at 7:05 p.m. Join the action on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM, or on the USHL's streaming video provider, HockeyTV.
