Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-Jason O'Neil scored twice and Mikhali Berdin earned his first career USHL shutout with 32 saves as the Stampede blanked the Des Moines Buccaneers, 2-0, before 5,166 fans at the PREMIER Center Friday night. Both of O'Neil's goals came in the second period while Austin Albrecht chipped in two assists for the Herd who won for the fourth straight time on home ice and improved to 9-11-1 on the season.
After a scoreless first period in which the Herd were outshot 11-5, Sioux Falls got going in the second period. Jason O'Neil got the Herd on the board at 6:30 with a power play tally. Austin Albrecht sent a pass down low to Alex Stevens who slid the puck through the crease and onto the stick of O'Neil who batted it home to give Sioux Falls a 1-0 lead with the power play goal. Less than four minutes later O'Neil struck again for his second of the night. Albrecht sent a pass up the right wing side to Paul DeNaples who had the puck jump off his stick, but spun around behind the net and sent a pass to the edge of the right circle for O'Neil who wristed it past Bucs goaltender Jake Kucharski and into the upper left hand corner of the net for a 2-0 edge. Des Moines outshot the Herd 10-8 in the period.
The Bucs got a 5-on-3 advantage late in the second period that carried over into the third, but the Stampede penalty kill unit and Berdin were sharp all night and denied the Bucs a chance to get back into the game. It remained 2-0 late into the game when the Bucs went on their fourth power play of the night, but Sioux Falls kept them off the board with another kill and held on for a 2-0 victory.
Des Moines outshot the Herd 11-3 in the third period and 32-16 in the game. Sioux Falls finished 1-for-1 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Stampede host the Omaha Lancers Saturday night at 7:05 PM at the PREMIER Center for Military Night, presented by South Dakota Army National Guard. Doors open at 6 PM and be sure to be in your seats by 7 PM for a special presentation for the national anthem and a very special ceremonial puck drop.
