Lincoln Stars News Release
Lincoln, Neb. - A four-goal third period shot the Lincoln Stars past the Dubuque Fighting Saints for a 5-1 win on Friday in the Ice Box.
The victory pushed the Stars to 11-9-3 and gave them two points to open a four-game stretch with four players and a coach lost to international competition.
Dylan Woolf put the Stars on the board at 12:15 of the second period with a wrist shot from the point that beat Fighting Saints goalie Evan Fear to the blocker side. The goal was Woolf's second of the season. Henry Bowlby and Sam Sternschein had the assists.
Dubuque evened the score with less than three minutes left in the period when Colin Theisen collected a rebound from a long shot and went five-hole on Stars goalie Derek Schaedig. Immediately after the goal, Mike Gillespie was denied on a short breakaway that could have given the Stars the lead.
The teams went into the second intermission tied, 1-1, despite the Stars outshooting the Fighting Saints, 24-21.
Christian Krygier scored a timely first USHL goal at 1:27 of the third with a shot from the left point to make it 2-1. The Stars held onto the one-goal lead for most of the third until Dominick Mersch scored his fourth of the season on a breakaway with less than two minutes remaining to make it 3-1. Sam Sternschein added an empty netter less than one minute later for his fourth goal of the season, then Mersch tacked on his second of the night before the buzzer to complete the four-goal spread.
Shaedig made 27 saves in his first USHL start. Woolf, Krygier and Sternschein both registered a goal and an assist, while Mersch had his first multi-goal game of the season.
Lincoln finished 0/2 on the power play and 2/2 on the penalty kill.
