RENO, Nev. ? Four two-out singles in the top of the eighth inning, propelled the Yuma Scorpions to a 6-3 victory over the Reno Silver Sox on Friday night. The win broke a seven game losing streak for the Scorpions (13-9) as Henry Calderon and Nik Crouch each had two hits, resulting in starter Charles Merricks' fourth win of the season.
Yuma trailed 3-2 entering the eighth inning before Calderon ripped a single, starting the two-out rally. After Maikel Jova reached on an error by Reno shortstop Chuck Sindlinger, Yosvany Almario singled, scoring Calderon to tie the game at 3-3.
Crouch and then Mike Goss preceded to hit RBI singles, scoring Jovaand Almario, respectively, to give the visitors a 5-3 lead entering the bottom of the eighth.
The Scorpions pushed the lead to 6-3 after Rich Janeway?s RBI double in the ninth inning scored Jordan Prado.
Merricks improved to 4-0 by pitching seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits.
Matt Saucedo and Amad Stephens came into preserve the victory for Yuma.
The Silver Sox started off the game strong thanks to a solo home run by third baseman Carlos Madrid, giving Reno the early lead.
Going into the fifth inning, the Scorpions tried to steal the lead from the Silver Sox, scoring two runs on a single by Gabriel Mayorga, scoring Goss and Pascual Matos.
However, the Silver Sox wouldn't let that happen so easily. With catcher Masa Chikazawa, centerfielder Victor Hall blasted a homerun over the right field wall to re-take the lead for the Silver Sox, 3-2.
Silver Sox starter Dusty Bergman pitched his best, but was undone by Silver Sox errors and bad defense. Every Scorpions run, except for one came with two outs. He gave up five runs but just two were earned.
The Silver Sox and Scorpions return to Peccole Park at 7:05 p.m. tonight in game two of the three-game series.
