Hanover MA. August 29th, 2014 - The Boston Breakers announced 2014 team awards from participating media, front office staff, and season ticket holders voting via email.
Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was voted Most Valuable Player and named the NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2014 season along with NWSL Best 11 honors. Naeher, 26, started all 24 games for the Breakers this season. She led the league in goalkeeper minutes with 2,115 and her 106 saves also earned her #1 league ranking for regular 2014 season.
The Stratford, Conn. native had three shutouts during the season - including a 10-save clean sheet in a 2-0 victory August 10 against defending champions Portland Thorns FC that earned her NWSL Player of the Week honors for Week 18 of the 2014 season.
The Penn State product was most recently called into the U.S. Women's National Team for the squad's August 20 friendly against Switzerland, but was an unused substitute.
Midfielder and U.S. National team member Heather O'Reilly claimed the Golden Boot award "â¹as well NWSL BEST 22 honors. O'Reilly played 22 games with 21 starts playing 1,874 minutes. Her nine goals were a team high that earned her fifth place over all in the league. O'Reilly converted six penalties, had 34 shots on goal with 53 total that also ranked her seventh place in the league tied with Western New York's Samantha Kerr.
Defender of the year went to St. Louis native Julie King who signed as a discovery player with the Breakers in March 2013 after playing in 2012 with Boston in the WPSL Elite. King played 17 games with 17 starts in the NWSL 2014 season. Although King missed a significant amount of games from injury she did return at the end of the season to finish 2014 playing 1,530 minutes with one goal, one assist and five shots on goal.
Newcomer Jazmine Reeves, 22, claimed Rookie of the Year for the Boston Breakers. In her first professional season Reeves played 17 games with 13 starts playing 1,151 minutes. Reeves had 23 shots, 12 on goal and finished 7 that put her in second place for the 2014 season behind O'Reilly. Reeves had a breakthrough performance on May 28th home at Harvard with a hat trick in the 4-1 win over the Portland Thorns that earned her Player of the Week honors.
