Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports had a hard time closing out innings on Thursday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark. As a result, the Lancaster JetHawks earned a second straight lopsided victory by scoring 11 runs, all with two outs. Lancaster earned a split of the four-game set with the Ports, winning the finale by a final of 11-4 in front of an Education Day crowd of 4,311.
The JetHawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out, two-run homer by Roberto Ramos off Ports starter Zack Erwin (2-2). It became a 3-0 lead following a two-out RBI double by Carlos Herrera in the second inning.
Stockton plated its first two runs without the benefit of a hit in the third. Brallan Perez was hit by a pitch and Collin Theroux walked to put two aboard. After a sacrifice bunt advanced them into scoring position, Nate Mondou walked to load the bases. Melvin Mercedes supplied a sacrifice fly to left field foul territory to score the first run of the inning and a wild pitch provided the second as the Ports cut their deficit to 3-2.
Lancaster would get three runs back in the top of the fourth. With two on and two out, Alan Trejo hit a two-run double to left and Colton Welker followed with an RBI double to right to make it a 6-2 contest.
Erwin would suffer the loss, going four-plus innings and allowing six runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out three.
The Ports had three of their four hits in the contest come in the fourth inning. With one out, Edwin Diaz hit his third home run in as many games to make it 6-3. Luis Barrera followed with a double and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Theroux to cut the JetHawks lead to 6-4. Those were the final runs allowed by JetHawks starter Logan Longwith (1-2) as he went on to pick up the victory, going five innings and allowing three hits while walking three and striking out three.
Heath Holder, Salvador Justo and Reid Humphreys combined to one-hit the Ports over the final four innings of the contest.
Lancaster would widen its lead over the final two frames beginning in the eighth. With one on and two out, Trejo hit a two-run homer off Ports reliever Angel Duno to make it 8-4. Duno allowed two runs on just the one hit over two-and-two-thirds innings. Sam Sheehan pitched the ninth and gave up a three-run homer with two outs to Herrera that ran the Jethawks lead to 11-4.
After splitting a four-game set with Lancaster, the Ports welcome the Inland Empire 66ers to Banner Island Ballpark for a three-game series beginning on Friday night. Jake Bray (1-0, 1.65 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Inland Empire right-hander Joe Gatto (2-1, 5.48 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
