Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Chicago Steel left wing Jack Gessert (Novi, Mich.) has committed to play for the Brown University Bears (ECAC) in Providence, R.I. Gessert, 21, is the 19th player on the Steel's active roster to commit to an NCAA Division I hockey program.
The 6-2, 201-pound forward has tallied three goals and one assist in 10 games with the Steel since being acquired Dec. 29 from the Kenai River Brown Bears of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). Two of those goals were scored in Chicago's Jan. 15 comeback victory at Madison, including a highlight-reel backhanded shot from Gessert's knees with his back facing the net, tying the game with just 32 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
"We're extremely excited for Jack to earn this opportunity to attend and play hockey at Brown University," said Chicago Steel Head Coach Dan Muse. "Jack came in here with the goal of helping the Chicago Steel win games while also securing a college commitment. He has worked hard for this to come about and he has been a great player for us since joining our team."
Gessert, who turned 21 earlier this month, is excited to play Division I hockey, but is equally thrilled for the educational opportunity he has earned through the commitment.
"I'm really excited. Brown plays a bump-and-grind style and they work hard all over the ice. That's the style I try to play," said Gessert. "Brown offers an Ivy League education. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
The Brown Bears compete in the ECAC conference. Two of Gessert's Steel teammates are also committed to ECAC programs: Jake Nielsen (St. Lawrence University) and Billy Sweezey (Yale University). Additionally, Steel left wing Brandon Duhaime will play collegiate hockey a couple miles from Gessert at Providence College.
The Steel remain home this weekend with a pair of Eastern Conference showdowns at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Chicago hosts the Madison Capitols on Friday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a visit from the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office inside Fox Valley Ice Arena, by phone at 855-51-STEEL or online at ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
