Summary
Akron's Matt Whitehouse threw four hitless innings in a spot-start, and Luigi Rodriguez had a pair of hits and an RBI, as the RubberDucks beat the Altoona Curve, 4-2, Tuesday night at PNG Field in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Turning Point
The RubberDucks (19-21) scored a pair of key runs in the fifth inning against Yeudy Garcia (2-3) to build a 3-0 lead. Mark Mathias singled and scored on a double by Mike Papi. One out later, Papi scored on a throwing error by Garcia on a slug-bunt by Bobby Bradley.
Winging It
Whitehouse was called upon to start the game since the RubberDucks are down a starter due to the recent injury to D.J. Brown. The 26-year-old lefty delivered four sensational innings, holding the Curve hitless. He walked only one batter- Kevin Kramer- with one out in the fourth. Cameron Hill (2-1) worked the next two innings, and allowed one run on three hits. Dylan Baker was touched for a run in the eighth and gave way to hard-throwing right-hander Leandro Linares with Akron holding a 4-2 lead. Linares got a double-play grounder to end the eighth, and then got a strike-out-throw-out double play in the ninth to end the game and earn his first Double-A save.
Duck Tales
Rodriguez was 2-5 on the night. He drilled a double in the third that helped set up Akron's first run, and later drove in Akron's fourth run with a single in the sixth. Mathias was 2-3, with a walk and two runs scored. He extended his hit streak to six games.
