David Washington homered and Jayson Aquino turned in a strong start, but the Rochester Red Wings plated two seventh inning runs to edge the Tides 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
Washington gave the Tides an early lead in the second frame when he belted an opposite-field solo shot off of left-hander Adam Wilk. Washington would later single in the contest, and he's now hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games with an at-bat, over which he's batted .390 (16-41) with three doubles, four home runs and nine RBI.
Aquino (1-5) carried a shutout into the seventh before the Red Wings touched him up for a pair of runs. Tommy Field and John Ryan Murphy opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and a sacrifice fly by J.B. Shuck knotted the score at 1-1. One out later, Zack Granite lofted a fly ball to right-center field, but the ball eluded both Pedro Ãlvarez and Craig Gentry for a go-ahead triple, scoring Murphy and giving the Wings a 2-1 lead.
Rochester's bullpen made the lead hold up, with Ryan Eades (2-0) earning the win and Ryan Pressly working two innings to record the save.
Aquino took the tough-luck loss, as he scattered six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings of work. He struck out five and threw 75 of his 107 pitches for strikes.
Johnny Giavotella singled twice in the contest, extending his on-base stretch to 21 consecutive games. Giavotella has also hit safely in 10 straight contests, matching the longest stretch by a Tides player this season.
With the loss, Norfolk wrapped up its homestand with a 2-4 record.
The Tides will open a seven-game road trip on Monday night in Gwinnett, with first pitch from Coolray Field set for 7:05. Gabriel Ynoa (1-4, 6.04) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Lucas Sims (4-3, 3.54).
Notes: During Sunday's game, the Orioles outrighted LHP Paul Fry off of the 40-man roster and assigned him to Norfolk...Pedro Ãlvarez singled and walked in four plate appearances...Jesús Montero singled twice, his second straight multi-hit game...Vidal Nuño struck out two over two shutout innings of relief, lowering his ERA to 3.24...Norfolk's bullpen finished the homestand with a 2.05 ERA (6 ER, 26.1 IP).
