Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
LAST TIME OUT: The RailRiders lost a 2-0 final to the Toledo Mud Hens on Saturday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders were shut out for a fifth time on the year and for the second time by the Mud Hens. Despite the loss, SWB has won 15 of its last 21 games. Toledo has stumbled in 13 of 17.
SPECIAL IN A SETBACK: Luis Cessa (2-6) was left with a tough-luck loss after hurling eight innings. The right-hander allowed two runs, a solo shot to Steven Moya in the sixth, and a two-out, RBI-double to Jason Krizan in the seventh. Cessa yielded five hits in all and struck out seven without a walk. He became the first RailRider to last eight or more innings since Chad Green went eight in a 2-0 win at Gwinnett on July 14, 2016. Cessa had not lasted eight innings since a June 17, 2015 win at Portland by a 3-1 score while with the Mets' Double-A Binghamton club (8IP, 5H, 1R, 2BB, 5K). He fell two outs short of matching his longest career outing. With Short Season-A Brooklyn, he fired 8.2 innings for a home win over Lowell on Sept. 3, 2012.
DREW DEALT: The RailRiders were held to a single hit over seven innings by Drew VerHagen (4-3). The right-hander worked around four walks and fanned eight. Edward Mujica allowed a single to Tyler Wade to being the ninth, but bounced back to strike out the side for his third save.
RED THUNDER: Clint Frazier co-leads the RailRiders in home runs (9) and outright leads in RBIs (30) and walks (27). He ranks among the IL's best in doubles (1st, 16) and extra-base hits (3rd, 25).
DEADPOOL: Tyler Wade reached three times, walking twice, and stole his 14th base of the year. That has him two steals off the pace shared by Salt Lake's Eric Young, Jr. and Gwinnett's Ozzie Albies for tops in Triple-A. Wade is on pace to post 38 steals this season. The franchise's single-season record of 44 was set by Tommy Barrett in 1989. Wade ranks among the IL's best in hits (4th, 59), average (10th, .295) and runs scored (2nd, 38). He made his first career start in center field on May 8 at Pawtucket and got his first nod in right field on May 16 vs. the Paw Sox. He had no outfield experience and just one start at third base in regular-season play entering 2017. On April 29, May 6, 14, 21 and 29, he drew starts at the hot corner and first tasted the outfield with an April 30 nod in left. His first-ever outfield time came in the 2016 Arizona Fall League when he started 16 of his 18 games played in the outfield (5-RF, 4-LF, 7-CF).
FOWL BALL: Dustin Fowler ranks among the IL's best in batting average (7th, .300), hits (1st, 64), slugging percentage (3rd, .563), extra-base hits (1st, 31), doubles (T-2nd, 15), triples (1st, 7) and total bases (1st, 120). His seven triples tie him for tops in all of MiLB with five others including Advanced-A Tampa's Jorge Mateo. Fowler is on pace to triple 19 times. The single-season franchise record is 16, set by Shane Victorino during his 2005 IL MVP campaign.
SWIPER, NO SWIPING!: SWB leads the IL in caught-stealing efficiency at 53% (21 of 40 caught). Eddy Rodriguez stands as the IL's top catcher in the category. With Rodriguez behind the plate SWB has nabbed 11 men in 20 attempts (55%). The IL's average caught-stealing efficiency minus SWB stands at 31%.
YOUNG GUNS: Wade, Fowler and Frazier are all 22 years old. Gleyber Torres is just 20 years of age. The IL's mean-average age for position players early this season stands a shade under 27. SWB boasts the IL's third-youngest group of position players (LHV-24.7, DUR-24.8, SWB-24.9).
THE OFFENSIVE: SWB's offense ranks among the IL's best in: R/G (3rd, 4.68), AVG (1st, .267), OBP (2nd, .338), SLG (1st, .430), OPS (1st, .768), 2B (1st, 116), 3B (T-4th, 12), HR (4th, 51) and SB (4th, 47).
CATCH IT HERE: PNC Field will host the 2017 Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game on Sept. 19 at 7:07 p.m. For tickets or more information, please call 570-969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailriders.com.
