Pitcher's Duel Goes To Skeeters In Walk-Off Fashion In Ten Innings

(Sugar Land, TX) - The Sugar Land Skeeters (29-14, 70-36) defeated the New Britain Bees (22-21, 55-51) 2-1 in walk-off fashion in ten innings at Constellation Field on Saturday night to even up the three-game weekend series at a victory apiece. New Britain falls to 6-2 when free baseball is played in 2018, (2-2 on the road), and are now 1-1 versus Sugar Land in extra-inning ballgames this season.
New Britain starting pitcher Kyle Simon tallied a no-decision in the contest despite an impressive seven inning performance in which he allowed only one run on three hits, walking two and striking out four, recording his seventh quality start of the campaign. In his Atlantic League of Professional debut, Sugar Land starting pitcher Michael Mariot also did not factor in the game's final outcome after tossing two scoreless innings on two hits allowed and one strikeout in seven batters faced.
Sugar Land took an immediate 1-0 lead against Simon in the bottom half of the first inning by way of a sacrifice fly off the bat of Juan Silverio that allowed Anthony Giansanti to score the game's first run after Giansanti walked with one man down, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third base. New Britain tied the game at one in the top of the sixth off reliever Dan Runzler thanks to a sacrifice fly from Darren Ford that enabled Ryan Wagner to cross the plate after he began the rally with a leadoff walk. The Skeeters threatened once again in the home half of the seventh, loading the bases with one away, but Simon made the king-sized pitch he needed to, inducing Javier Betancourt to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play to keep the game all square at one, the fourth twin-killing of the series turned by the visitors. With the game still knotted at one in the bottom of the tenth, Denis Phipps sent the Skeeters faithful home with smiles on their faces as he launched a walk-off home run to left field that hit the foul pole on a 2-1 offering from losing pitcher Evan Scribner (1-4), making a winner out of Sugar Land reliever Vicente Campos (2-2), who was the seventh man to come out of the bullpen on the evening by Skeeters skipper Pete Incaviglia. The Bees return to New Britain Stadium on Tuesday, August 28th when they welcome in the reigning Atlantic League of Profession Baseball Champion York Revolution for a three-game midweek series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. It will be another Two-Fer Tuesday in the Hardware City, as fans can buy one regular priced ticket and get one FREE when purchasing online, by phone, or at the Bees Box Office.
