Texas Copperheads News Release
Each week txcopperheads.com talks with Head Coach Ollie Guidry about everything Copperheads. If you have a question for Coach Guidry, email it to cronquillo@texascopperheads.com. Next week, Coach Guidry might answer your question!
This week Coach discusses the week 11 win at Rio Grande Valley and the up coming 6/13/08 match up at Bossier-Shreveport.
On the Copperheads 6/7/08 win at Rio Grande Valley: "It was a must win for us."
On protecting the ball and causing turnovers against the Dorados: "Rudy did a great job of managing the football game offensively. The biggest factor in that whole game was the minimum amount of turnovers we had through out the course of that game. By us taking the ball away, it obviously gave us more chances to score touchdowns and put more points on the board."
On his team's week 11 performance: "We played as a team for the first time in a very long time...and it was very refreshing to see that."
On the short drops QB Rudy Carlton took during the game at Rio Grande Valley: "Looking at the tape and evaluating their defense and what they were good at, which is a pass rush, we wanted to neutralize that and eliminate it as much as possible. Rudy did a good job in his pre-snap and post snap reads and identifying where he needed to go with the football and making some good throws."
On K Nick Gatto's performance in week 11: "He was 4 out of 4 on FG attempts and that's the difference in the ball game...that's 12 points right there. Nick was as big a part of our success this week as anybody else."
On the Copperheads DBs: I'm very proud and pleased with those guys. Coach (Ed) Jenkins has been working very hard with the defense, especially the secondary. Those guys came out and played hard. James (Todd) had a big game with three interceptions and obviously was the defensive player of the week. Armar (Watson) played extremely well. He has such a knack for the football. No matter where the football is, he's going to be around it at some point in time and try to make a play. Darius (Pettigrew) stepped up in situations when he had to."
On playoff aspirations: "This week's game...this weekend... is extremely important to us as a football team. We're going to take it one game at a time...just like our motto, every day every play, one play at a time. We can't think too far ahead of ourselves right now. If we win this weekend, we have a great chance to put pressure on some teams in our division."
On the Battle Wings' offense: "They have some experience. They're doing some very good things with their offense. But it doesn't matter who we play or how good they are, it's all about putting pressure on the QB. If the QB is having pressure in his face, and he's not seeing those guys (his receivers), it's a different ball game. It's up to our defensive line to put pressure on the QB to help our DB's out as much as possible. But I feel just as good about our DBs as they feel about their WRs."
On what it will take for the offense to be successful against Bossier-Shreveport: "If we can piggy back off of last week and kind of carry on some of the success we had versus Rio Grande, I think it's a great chance for us to get out there and continue to produce points. Like I told our guys in meetings today, and I'm going to continue to tell them all week, I'm not content with our offensive production until I hit some of the marks I've set as a head coach. Whether it's touchdowns per game, points per game or total production, we're going to fight and strive toward some of the goals we set for ourselves."
