Amarillo Venom News Release
AMARILLO, Texas You've seen the Amarillo Dusters battle week in and week out on the gridiron. You've heard about practice and all of the traveling. There is one more key thing that the players do - community service.
"I talked all year about my players having great character," head coach Chris MacKeown said. "Being involved in the community is important to me and these players."
The Dusters organization has partnered with many organizations for community outreach including the YMCA, Goodwill Industries, and several different schools in the area.
Throughout the month of May, Dusters players, coaches and office staff were involved in several career fairs at elementary and middle schools.
"I think it's great that kids are starting to really think about what they would like to do at such an early age," said Dusters media relations director, Andi Leavitt. "They definitely learned that professional sports is not all about the big paycheck. Players work hard for everything they get."
The Dusters also partnered with Goodwill Industries during the month of May for National Goodwill Week. People that brought donations to Goodwill locations received a Dusters ticket voucher.
During that same week, the Dusters had a food drive to benefit the Food Bank. People were able to "buy" tickets by bringing in canned goods.
The players have been a large part of many of these community service events. This week, groups of players visited two different YMCA's in Amarillo. One group took a group of kids to volunteer at Goodwill. One group played with a group of YMCA kids for a few hours. Later this month, the Dusters will be at another YMCA location to play with the kids.
"Being a positive role model to kids is so important," Leavitt said. "You never really know what kind of impact you will have on a child's life."
Catch the Dusters in action on the field this Saturday as they take on the Rio Grande Valley Dorados. Tickets start at just $16 and are on sale now. To reserve your seats, call the Dusters box office at 806.350.7277, visit www.dustersfootball.com, or stop by any Panhandle Tickets outlet.
