Maine Celtics News Release
Portland, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, erased a 17-point deficit in the 3rd quarter, only to fall in overtime to the Canton Charge, 120-118.
Trey Davis led all scorers with 28 points on 10-17 shooting, including 5-7 from beyond the arc. Davis also added 9 assists in the loss. Boston Celtics Two-Way Player Kadeem Allen added 24 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Jon Holmes also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Canton (1-2) was led by John Holland, who scored 43 points on 16-25 shooting, including 6-10 from three-point range. Former Boston Celtics star Kendrick Perkins finished with 14 points and 11 boards.
The Red Claws (3-1) and Charge traded baskets in the first half, with Allen and Devin Williams leading the attack for Maine. Canton scored often, relying on Two-Way Player London Perrantes. When the dust settled on the period, Canton held a 32-29 lead. Canton shot nearly 70% from the field in the opening period. The 2nd quarter would be more of the same. Perrantes left the game with a neck injury and did not return. The Red Claws out-scored the Charge 31-30 in the period, and Canton held a 62-60 halftime lead.
Canton jumped out to a huge lead in the 3rd quarter, as Maine consistently turned the ball over and failed to score. The Red Claws did not score a field goal in nearly 8 minutes of play, and the Charge increased their lead to 17 points. That's when Davis and Daniel Dixon took over. Hitting back-to-back three's, Davis got Maine back in the game. Dixon also heated up from beyond the arc. Maine scored 22 points in the final 4:00 of the 3rd, somehow out-scoring Canton 24-22 in the quarter and the game went to the 4th quarter tied.
Maine continued the hot shooting in the 4th quarter, with Davis and Allen leading the charge. The Red Claws extended the lead to 7 points before Holland led the comeback. Holland hit big shot after big shot, evening the game and helping the Charge force overtime, tied at 112.
In OT, former Red Claw Marcus Thornton gave Canton the lead. The Red Claws answered with Allen's driving lay-in. In the final seconds, the Red Claws held a one point lead. Holland got his shot, hitting a gigantic three-pointer. After missing the game-tying free throws, the Red Claws couldn't grab a final rebound on Canton's free throw attempt, and the game ended.
Maine shot 46.1% (41-89) from the field, including 43.5% (20-46) from downtown. Canton shot 47.9% (45-94) from the floor, and 50% (12-24) from beyond the arc.
The Red Claws return to action Thursday night when Maine takes on Grand Rapids at the Expo. Tickets are on sale now by calling 207-210-6655 or visiting MaineRedClaws.com.
