Cleveland Charge News Release

The Canton Charge (1-2), powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, defeated the Maine Red Claws (3-1) in overtime, 120-118, at the Portland Expo on Sunday afternoon for their first win of the 2017-18 campaign.

The Charge were led by an outstanding effort from John Holland, who netted a career-high 43 points on 16-of-25 from the floor and 6-of-10 from three-point range with two steals in 41 minutes. Kendrick Perkins and JaCorey Williams each posted double-doubles for the Charge - Perkins with 14 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks and Williams with 14 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Marcus Thornton had an all-around effort of 13 points, five rebounds and seven assists in 46 minutes for Canton.

Leading 62-20 coming into the third, the Charge went on a 19-2 run to begin the quarter by forcing seven turnovers and take a 79-62 lead. The Red Claws bounced back the last 4:13 of the period and went on a 22-5 run of their own to knot the game at 84-84 heading into the final frame. Neither team created separation of more than two possessions throughout the fourth until a Josh Adeyeye triple with 2:56 left gave Maine a 110-103 lead. Canton followed up by scoring on their next three possessions, capped off by a Holland bucket and foul, that gave them a 112-110 lead with 27.8 seconds left.

Out of the timeout, The Red Claws' Kadeem Allen slashed to the basket from the top of the key to convert a layup and tie it at 112-112. The ball was in Holland's hands for Canton's final shot, but he couldn't get a 27-footer to fall as the game went to an extra two minutes. The Charge got the ball to begin OT and Marcus Thornton put them up right away with a 21-footer on a pass from Holland. After traded misses and turnovers, Trey Davis split a pair of free throws to put Maine within one at 114-113, but Holland and the Charge would not be denied. Holland hit three-pointers on Canton's next two possessions to give them their third straight win against Maine overall.

Maine was led by Trey Davis's 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting and 5-of-7 from three-point range with nine assists and four steals in 31 minutes off the bench. Kadeem Allen poured in 24 points with 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals for the Red Claws. Jonathan Holmes put up a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds with two blocks in 30 minutes.
