Cardinals Shut out Braves in Game 2 Win

DANVILLE, VA - After an extra innings win against Danville in game one, the Cardinals handily defeated the Braves in game two, 8-0.

Cole Aker started the game for the Cardinals, making his Appalachian League debut. Aker went 5.1 strong innings, giving up only three hits and tallied eight strikeouts.

The Cardinals started the scoring in the top of the second. Leandro Cedeno reached on a fielding error to start the second. Carlos Soto walked to move Cedeno to second. With one out, Michael Perri hit an RBI double to score Cedeno and give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Then with two outs, Luis Flores hit a two-RBI double that scored Michael Perri and Moises Castillo to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.

Johnson City kept the scoring going in the top of the third when Jonatan Machado led off with a double. Then Kevin Woodall launched his eighth homerun that traveled 416 ft. and left the ballpark at 101 mph off his bat. That increased the lead to 5-0 for the Cardinals.

In the fifth, Johnson City kept their foot on the gas and scored one. Luis Flores doubled and Kevin Woodall singled to score Flores from second to increase the lead to 6-0 for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals scored one in the sixth after Luis Flores led off with a double. Brandon Riley singled to move Flores to third and Jonatan Machado hit a sac fly to left to score Flores and make the score 7-0.

In the seventh, with two outs, Moises Castillo singled to keep the inning alive for Johnson City. Luis Flores singled and Castillo advanced to third. Danville balked and Castillo scored from third and that is where the scoring ended at 8-0 in favor of Johnson City.

The Cardinals used two pitchers after Cole Aker. Junior Gonzalez was first out of the bullpen. Gonzalez notched his second hold of the season. He threw three innings of shutout baseball, only surrendering two hits and notching two strikeouts. Juan Alvarez came on to finish the game, throwing 0.2 innings, and striking out one.

First pitch in the finale between the Cardinals and Braves is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET tomorrow. The Cardinals then travel to Pulaski for a three game series with the Yankees and then return home on Friday July 27th, for a three game series in Johnson City with the Braves.
