Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, Va. - The Danville Braves were shutout for the fourth time of the 2018 season on Sunday afternoon at Legion Field.
The Braves had scoring opportunities in the bottom of the fifth and eighth innings.
In the fifth, Zack Soria and Ray Soderman opened the inning with back-to-back singles, giving Danville runners at first and second with no outs. Next hitter, Carlos Baerga grounded off Johnson City pitcher Cole Aker's glove, and straight to the Cardinals shortstop Michael Perri, who promptly threw to first for the out. With the runners advanced to second and third and one out, Nick Shumpert struck out swinging and Greg Cullen flew out to center.
In the eighth, Shumpert opened with his sixth double of the year, but never advanced past second base in the inning. The double was Shumpert's sixth, which is a career high. In his previous two seasons in the Braves organization, the product of Denver, Colorado, slashed five doubles in 2016 and four doubles in 2017.
Soria notched two hits on the day, which is his second multi-hit game of his 2018 season. The second-year professional had four multi-hit games in his first year with the GCL Braves.
Ryan Shetter took the loss on Sunday after surrendering his first earned runs of the year. Shetter opened the season with five innings without allowing an earned run. The former Texas Tech Red Raider gave up five total runs and two earned, suffering six hits and striking out four Cardinals.
The D-Braves pitching staff sent down 10 batters on Sunday, which lands them at 263 on the year through 31 games.
Danville will finish out their six-game homestand tomorrow against the Johnson City Cardinals at 7 p.m. The Braves will host Faith Night and Dollar Monday at Legion Field.
