Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - Travis Blankenhorn hit his fifth home run of the season for the Miracle, but the Tampa Tarpons hung on to take the series opener, 2-1, on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Tampa opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning against Fort Myers starter Anthony Marzi. Diego Castillo was hit by a pitch with two out and Tim Lynch followed with an RBI double down the right field line. The Tarpons added an unearned run in the fifth inning.
Blankenhorn's homer, to the opposite field in left, came with one out in the seventh off Tampa starter Trevor Stephan.
The Miracle rallied in the ninth inning, but left two runners on base. Lewin Diaz singled with one out and Nelson Molina came on to pinch run. Then, with two out, Jimmy Kerrigan hit a ground ball up the middle. Tampa shortstop Hoy Jun Park fielded it to his left and threw to second, but the ball was dropped by second baseman Diego Castillo. Taylor Grzelakowski followed with a fly ball to the warning track in left field to end the game.
Stephan (2-0) earned the win for Tampa. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out six. Marzi (1-1) suffered the hard-luck loss. The left-hander surrendered just one earned run in six innings. He gave up four hits, walked one, and struck out five.
Trevor Lane recorded the final six outs to pick up his first save of the season for Tampa. The Tarpons out-hit the Miracle 8-4 in the contest.
The three-game series continues on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Right-hander Tyler Wells (2-1) will start for Fort Myers against right-hander Freicer Perez (0-2). First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
