Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

BOWIE, MD - The Bowie Baysox (11-10) rallied past the Richmond Flying Squirrels (10-11), 8-7, in the opener of a three-game series at Prince George's Stadium on Friday night. The Baysox erased a four-run Squirrels' lead with four runs in the sixth inning.

The Squirrels jumped on Bowie right-hander Mitch Atkins in the first inning, plating a lone run to take the lead. Atkins walked Nick Noonan and Charlie Culberson followed with a double into the left-field corner to bring him around from first base for a 1-0 lead.

Richmond added to their advantage with three consecutive hits to start the second inning. Roger Kieschnick led off and punched a single into left field. With Kieschnick running, Mike McBryde spun a triple up the right-field line on the first pitch from Atkins. Kieschnick scored easily, while McBryde slid into third ahead of an unsuccessful relay throw. Jose Flores capped the rally with a single into left field, plating McBryde for a 3-0 lead.

The Baysox got a run back off of Squirrels' left-hander Clayton Tanner in the bottom of the third inning. Tanner hit Pedro Florimon with a breaking pitch to start the inning, and he moved to second base on a ground out. Greg Miclat singled Florimon to third base, where he scored on a Tanner wild pitch.

Following the Squirrels' uprising in the second, Atkins recovered to retire the next nine batters. However, with one out in the fifth, he walked Skyler Stromsmoe. Justin Christian followed and blasted a two-run home run to left-center field, the two-run shot extending the Richmond lead to 5-1.

Bowie got a lone run back in the bottom of the fifth when Tanner conceded a one-out single to Florimon. Carlos Rojas sent what appeared to be a double-play ball to short, but Noonan misplayed the ball, and Richmond didn't record an out on the play. Xavier Avery followed and drove home Florimon with a single.

Richmond tacked the run back on in the sixth, but the bottom fell out for the Squirrels in the bottom of the inning. Joe Mahoney started trouble for Tanner with a lead-off double. Tanner walked Waring, and Caleb Joseph made it a one-run game when he drilled a three-run home run to left field. Tanner departed after the blast, but the damage wasn't done as Osiris Matos entered in relief. Matos struck out the first two batters he faced, but Rojas singled and Avery singled behind him. Matos uncorked a wild-pitch and the Baysox had tied the game, 6--6.

The Baysox took the lead for the first time in the seventh when Mahoney sent a solo-shot to dead-center field for a 7-6 advantage. They ensured their victory with a third run scored via wild-pitch in the eighth. Right-hander Edwin Quirarte delivered the third wild-pitch, which scored Rojas for the second time.

The Squirrels went down swinging in the ninth, when Christian was hit by a Brandon Cooney pitch while Richmond was down to its final strike. Noonan followed and delivered an RBI double to the right field corner, pulling the Squirrels back within a run. Cooney recovered to strike out Culberson to end the game, earning his first save of the season.

Right-hander Tim Bascom (1-1) earned the win for the Baysox, having worked a scoreless seventh inning. Matos (1-3) was tagged with the loss for the Squirrels. Neither starter factored in the decision, as Atkins allowed six runs over six innings and Tanner conceded five runs over five innings plus three batters.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 6:35 on Saturday night at Prince George's Stadium. LHP Ryan Verdugo (1-0, 1.65) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Eddie Gamboa (1-2, 5.28) for the Baysox.
