CEDAR PARK, Texas - Deshaun Thomas recorded his third double-double of the season posting a season-high 29 points and 10 rebounds as the Austin Spurs (19-11) fell to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (16-15) 117-103 Tuesday afternoon for College and Career Readiness Day at Cedar Park Center.
Keifer Sykes contributed 16 points and Julian Washburn posted a season-high 14 points in Austin's effort. Will Cummings led RGV with 24 points and Raphiael Putney recorded 23 points.
Austin and RGV exchanged baskets to begin the game with the score, 18-15 RGV halfway through the first quarter. The quarter saw just two lead changes with RGV's largest lead (7) coming with four minutes remaining on a two-point basket by Chris Walker. Houston Rockets assignee Donatas Motiejunas led all scorers with eight points in the quarter, while Austin was led by Youssou Ndoye and Thomas each posting six points.
RGV would continue the momentum in the second going on a 12-0 run with eight minutes left to take their largest lead of the half (17). They outscored Austin 33-21 in the quarter pushing their lead to 61-46 at the half. Joshua Smith led RGV with eight points and Washburn led Austin with eight points in the quarter.
Austin fought back in the third outscoring RGV 34-25 and cutting their lead to six, 86-80. Austin shot 84 percent from the field in the quarter compared to RGV's 47 percent shooting. Thomas led Austin's comeback effort tallying 12 points, Cummings led RGV with 11 points in the quarter.
RGV maintained the lead through the fourth quarter outscoring Austin 31-23. Cummings led all scorers with nine points, while Sykes led Austin with eight points.
