Cleveland Charge News Release

The Canton Charge, presented by SecureData 365 and powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, came up short to the Delaware 87ers, 102-93, at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark on Tuesday night. The defeat leaves Canton (0-2) searching for their first win of the season, while Delaware (1-1) took their 2015-2016 Home Opener.

Canton held a 22-19 first quarter advantage thanks in part to a total team effort on defense, grabbing 19 boards as a unit and limiting Delaware to 8-of-27 shooting (30%). The 87ers were able to keep the game close through forcing Charge miscues for extra possessions, with the visitors turning the ball over 10 times in the opening 12 minutes resulting in seven points.

The Sevens bounced back with a strong efforts on both ends of the floor to begin the second quarter. Delaware rolled off a 17-2 run in the first 4:23 of the second to pull ahead 36-24. Canton didn't allow the deficit to grow further and kept close with a 12-4 run of their own to end the half, scoring on six of their final eight possessions to trail just 46-42 at the break.

Canton's starting five played heavy minutes in the third quarter to get them back in the game, with a +30 differential for the starting unit in the third alone. Trailing 49-42 early in the quarter, the Charge counterpunched with a 19-5 run to pull ahead 61-54. Delaware's second unit, subbing all five in for the end of the run, then pulled the momentum back in their favor. The Sevens' reserves closed the third on a 15-3 run of their own to put the hosts back in front 69-54 heading into the final frame.

The Charge couldn't get over the hump in the fourth quarter, tying the game once but never pulling ahead. Pointer provided a spark with 10 points in the quarter and two steals, but the Sevens staved off the comeback attempt by hitting 11-of-19 shots as a team (58%). The loss for Canton evens the all-time series between the two teams at 6-6.

Joe Harris netted 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting with nine rebounds and two steals in 39 minutes on assignment from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Michael Dunigan posted a double-double of 18 points and 13 boards with three blocks in 36 minutes. Pointer came off the bench to add 16 points, five rebounds and two steals. Nick Minnerath added 14 points and five rebounds in 28 minutes.

Re-acquired earlier today, Sean Kilpatrick led all scorers with 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting in 28 minutes of relief for the 87ers. Jordan McRae supplied 17 points and two steals in 32 minutes. John Bohannon scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting with five boards in 30 minutes of play.
