Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners lost 7-5 in 11 innings to the Frontier Greys on Friday night at Rent One Park when three runs scored in the last frame after a back and forth ballgame.

The Miners led 2-0 in the contest in the first inning on a leadoff walk by Aaron Gates and a double by Frank Martinez plus a Niko Vasquez sacrifice fly and a double by Michael Earley. The Greys, however, scored three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Rick Teasley battled through the first five innings to hold the Greys off the board from there while Greys starter Max Duval retired ten Miners in a row spanning from the third through the seventh.

The Miners would tie the score in the top of the seventh when Craig Massey led off with a walk and went to third on a double by Toby DeMello, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Brian Portelli to knot the score at three apiece. It remained 3-3 until the top of the ninth, when a single and an error moved Ben Lodge to second. After a ground ball with no advance and an intentional walk issed to Julio Rodriguez, an infield single loaded the bases and Scott Carcaise grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to give the Greys a 4-3 lead.

The Miners were again able to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. After a leadoff walk by Portelli, Gates sacrificed pinch-runner Adrian English to second. Martinez walked and Vasquez smacked a single into left field. English, however, was cut down at the plate by Shane Brown for the second out as Martinez took third on the play. With two outs, Earley chopped one to third base, and Zach Tanner fired wide of the bag, scoring the tying run on an error to make it 4-4.

Both sides failed to score in the tenth, setting up the international tiebreaker in the 11th. The Greys took full advantage against Eric Green (5-3), plating three runs on two hits plus a wild pitch and a fielder's choice play where all runners advanced safely. The Miners were able to score once in the bottom half on a passed ball and a wild pitch, but after two walks by Kyle Bogese put the tying runs on base, a grounder to first ended the game.

The Miners will look to even the series at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday night, with Jarett Miller scheduled to start for the Miners against the Greys' Bobby Shore.
