Red Claws' Hot Shooting, Buzzer Beaters Lead to 120-92 Win

Portland, ME- The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, got two Andre Stringer half-court buzzer- beaters to help earn a 120-92 victory over the Erie BayHawks on Sunday night at the Portland Expo Building. Stringer finished with 19 points and 12 assists, and Chris Babb added a game-high 24 points for Maine.

Daniel Coursey opened the game for Erie (13-21) with a layup at 11:43 of the first quarter for the BayHawks' only lead of the night. 27 seconds later, Stringer launched a three pointer to take the lead and the Red Claws (23-11) never looked back. He would go on to score five more points in the quarter while also getting six from Chris Babb and Asauhn Dixon-Tatum. Erie was paced by Seth Curry's seven in the quarter. Maine led 33-22 after the first.

Jason Calliste drained a three pointer to open the second, but Erie cut the lead down to eight by reeling off six straight. The Red Claws had the answer though, going on a 16-5 with Calliste, Stringer and Rodney McGruder scoring or assisting on all 14 points. The BayHawks looked to close out the half on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to eight, but Stringer hit his first buzzer beater of the game from 42 feet to head into the locker room with a 60-49 Maine lead.

Peyton Siva opened the third for the visitors with a pair of free throws before Maine blew the game wide open with a 19-4 run, with Babb scoring 11 on three deep balls and a pair of free throws while also assisting Dixon-Tatum on a dunk. Christian Watford and Omari Johnson also hit three pointers in the run. Curry, Coursey and Austin Daye converted the next six points for the BayHawks and Lenzelle Smith buried a three to spark a 9-2 run, but Maine ran their lead back to 23, capped by Stringer's second buzzer beater, this time from 40 feet. Maine led 95-72 heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to the new arrival Chaz Williams, who poured in seven of Maine's 25 fourth quarter points. Babb and Ralph Sampson each had four for the Red Claws in the period. Smith and John Bohannon scored five apiece for the BayHawks in the frame. The Red Claws cruised to the win by outscoring Erie in all four quarters.

The BayHawks were led by Daye (17 points, 10 rebounds). Curry (15), Coursey (14 points, two blocks), Bohannon (12 points, 11 rebounds), Smith (10) and Siva (10) round out the Erie players in double figures.

The Red Claws were led by Babb (24 points, six assists, five rebounds), while also getting a double-double from Stringer (19 points, 12 assists). Other key contributors were Calliste (15), McGruder (13 points, six rebounds), Watford (11), Williams (10 points, five assists) and Johnson (10). Sampson secured 17 rebounds and blocked four shots to go along with six points.

Maine is back home to take on the Grand Rapids Drive on Saturday, February 28th. This will be the two teams' first match-up. Erie travels to Des Moines to take on the Iowa Energy on Wednesday, February 25th.
