AUSTIN, Tex. - The Santa Cruz Warriors fell to the Austin Spurs 110-105 on Sunday, despite three players securing twenty-plus points each.
Forward Joe Alexander paced the Warriors with 24 points on 11-of-20 shooting, also adding ten rebounds. James Michael McAdoo notched 22 points with 10 rebounds, and Elliot Williams, seeing almost 37 minutes of play, had 21 points and 8 assists. Mychel Thompson also added 15 points and 4 steals off the bench, but the effort fell short of backing a win for Santa Cruz.
The Spurs were led by center JaMychal Green who shot 59% from the field, tallying 27 points and 14 rebounds. Jarell Eddie was on fire beyond the arc with six three-pointers on eight attempts, totaling 20 points on the night. Outside of Green's outstanding play, both Kyle Anderson and Bryce Cotton recorded double-doubles in Austin's first victory this season.
The Spurs raced ahead early in the first quarter after Green scored six points to push the lead to 7 in just under three minutes. Austin continued to outpace the Warriors, pushing the deficit to as much as 16 points in the first half.
The Warriors responded coming out of the break as they picked up their offensive intensity in a tightly-contested third quarter. A McAdoo driving slam dunk put the Warriors up by one point with just over two minutes left to go in the third quarter. The Spurs answered with a jumper from Turner and three-pointer from Murphy, entering the fourth quarter clinging to an 85-83 lead.
The Spurs found the spark they needed when An?derson scored on back-to-back possessions to help stave off another push from Santa Cruz. Davis's lay-up put the Spurs up by ten points in the fourth quarter with just under six minutes left to play in regulation. The resilient Warriors answered with an 8-4 run to finish the game but ultimately fell to Austin 110-105.
Austin shot 49% from the floor to the Warriors' 47%, and held the edge on rebounds (52-47), assists (26-15) and three-pointers made (11-6). Santa Cruz committed fewer turnovers (12-16) and had more steals (11-7) and more blocked shots (9-7).
The Santa Cruz Warriors travel to Bakersfield, California for Tuesday's game against the Jam, which tips off at 7:00 p.m. Pacific. The team will return home to Kaiser Permanente Arena on Friday to face the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
