Seattle Reign FC Acquire Rights to Garciamendez, Marshall from Spirit

Seattle Reign FC News Release

SEATTLE - Oct. 25, 2013 - Seattle Reign FC has acquired the NWSL rights to defenders Alina Garciamendez and Nikki Marshall as well as the No. 17 overall selection in the 2014 NWSL College Draft in a trade with the Washington Spirit.

In exchange, Reign FC sent to Washington the rights to forward Renae Cuéllar, the No. 23 overall selection in the 2014 draft and the NWSL rights to forward Jodie Taylor.

Cuéllar, an allocated Mexican forward, was acquired by Reign FC last July from FC Kansas City. Cuéllar appeared in seven matches for Reign FC in the 2013 NWSL season. Jodie Taylor, an English forward currently under contract with Sydney FC in the Australian W-League, was selected as a discovery player by Seattle earlier this year.

"We thank Renae for all she invested in the club last season," said Seattle Reign FC coach and general manager Laura Harvey. "We have set forth a thoughtful plan to reshape our roster prior to the upcoming season. Given the moves we've made - some announced, others not - and moves we are planning to make in the future, it was clear that Renae would have greater opportunities at another club. She is an energetic, talented forward who I expect will make an impression on her new club."

Nikki Marshall, who was selected by the Washington Spirit via waivers at the conclusion of last season, started all 22 games and registered one assist for Portland Thorns FC during the 2013 season. Marshall played collegiately at the University of Colorado where she is the all-time leading goal scorer.

Garciamendez, a Mexican international, was allocated to the Washington Spirit at the beginning of the 2013 NWSL season, but chose instead to join German side FFC Frankfurt, where she is currently under contract. Garciamendez has appeared in 17 matches with the Mexican Women's National Team, including representing Mexico in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.

"Garciamendez and Marshall are extremely talented defenders who could be great additions to our back line," added Harvey. "We are hopeful we will have the opportunity to add Marshall and Garciamendez to our roster at some point in the future."

Reign FC now owns the Nos. 9, 17 and 26 overall selections in the 2014 NWSL College Draft, which is scheduled to take place in January.
