Scrappers Flirt with Perfection while Splitting Twinbill
September 3, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
Auburn, NY- The first game after the Scrappers tossed the second no-hitter in franchise history almost made New York Penn League history. The Scrappers came within three outs in game 1 of becoming the first team in league history to throw back to back no-hitters. Cole Sulser took the perfect game into the final inning only to lose it on a 0-2 infield single to the leadoff man of the inning, Wilman Rodriguez. Game 2 saw the Scrappers allow 3 unearned runs as the fell 3-1.
Sulser (3-2), who was coming off a 6 inning 10 strikeout performance in Jamestown last week, was at the top of his game. He started the game off by striking out the side. Sulser finished the game going 6 innings and allowing just the 1 hit. He did not walk a batter and again struck out 10. Kerry Doane (2), who closed out the no-hitter, recorded the final 3 outs of the 7th inning to secure the 2-0 Scrappers win.
Offensively in game 1 the Scrappers got RBI singles from Claudio Bautista and Josh McAdams to account for their only runs of the game.
Game 2 was a different story for Mahoning Valley. While starter Kenny Mathews (0-3) took the loss, it was the defense that couldn't get the job done. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Bautista committed a fielding error to extend the inning. The Doubledays took advantage on the next batter when David Masters delivered an RBI single. Wilman Rodriguez added an RBI single as well in the 2nd innings for all the offense Auburn needed. Mathews ended up going 4 innings allowing just 4 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 2. Alexis Parades worked a perfect final 2 innings.
The Scrappers lone run came off the bat of Bautista in the 4th inning. Facing the Washington Nationals' 2012 #1 pick, Lucas Giolito, Bautista launched a 1-2 pitch over the scoreboard in leftfield for his 4th homerun of the season.
The Scrappers will conclude the 2013 season on Wednesday night at 7:05pm in Auburn. Caleb Hamrick will make the final start of the year for Mahoning Valley. You can catch all the action on www.mvscrappers.com with Tim Pozsgai.
