Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Joe Maloney socked a two-run, walk-off home run Sunday and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (40-29), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, closed out their championship first half with a 7-5 win in front of a season-best 5,247 fans at TicketReturn.com Field. It was the fifth walk-off hit of the season for the Pelicans who closed the first half with the second most wins in the Carolina League.
With Drew Robinson on first and two outs in the ninth inning, Maloney clubbed his first home run of the season to left field. The Pelicans did not hold a lead in the game until the game-winning big fly.
Ryan Harvey (6-1) tossed a scoreless ninth inning and earned the win for the Pelicans. Grant Sides (2-3) surrendered a two-out walk to Robinson before giving way to Fabio Martinez, who surrendered the game-winning home run.
Robinson finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored while Maloney was 3-for-5 with three knocked in.
The Pelicans rallied back from 4-1 down to get the win. Jake Skole sparked a three-run, sixth inning rally with a two-run double. Kellin Deglan started the scoring in the inning with an RBI single.
Maloney's home run was not his first big hit of the game. After the Mudcats reclaimed a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning, he tied the game with an RBI double down the left field line.
Preston Beck put the Pelicans on the board in the second inning with an RBI double.
Left-hander Will Lamb tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen after Victor Payano started and went three innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits.
The Pelicans resume play after the All-Star break when they take on the Frederick Keys this Friday, June 21st, at Harry Grove Stadium. The Pelican next home game is Friday, June 28th, when the Lynchburg Hillcats, Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Atlanta Braves, come to town for a three-game series.
