WINSTON-SALEM DASH (37-32) at WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS (33-36)

RHP Jason Van Skike (2-1, 1.83 ERA) vs. RHP Tyler Sample (0-2, 1.76 ERA)

1:35 p.m. - Frawley Stadium (Wilmington, Del.)

ROCKS END DASH'S FIRST HALF HOPES Wilmington officially slammed the door on the Dash's attempt to win the Southern Division's first half championship by edging Winston-Salem by a score of 3-2 on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium. Both Dennis Raben and Daniel Mateo went yard to provide the Blue Rocks with all the offense they would need. Wilmington starter Sam Selman recorded his second quality start of the season in a winning effort, while Spencer Patton tossed three shutout innings out of the bullpen for the save.

PELICANS SWOOP PAST DASH Myrtle Beach has claimed the first half crown in the Southern Division, so the Pelicans will return to the Carolina League postseason for the third consecutive season. The Pelicans enter their first half finale with a 9-1 record since a weather-created tie with Potomac on June 6. Prior to that game, Myrtle had lost 12 of 13 games to drop to 30-28. The Dash trailed the Pelicans by as many as 7.5 games during the first half, but Winston rallied to earn a share of first place from June 6-9. However, the Dash could not overcome the Birds for their third straight division crown.

FIRST LOSS IN THE FIRST STATE For the first time in six tries in 2013, Winston-Salem dropped a game in Wilmington. The Blue Rocks' one-run win snapped a seven-game win streak for the Dash in Delaware. It also ended an eight-game run overall for the Dash in the season series. Still, the Dash are 11-2 versus the Blue Crew in 2013. Dating back to the start of last season, the Dash have won 26 of their last 33 against the Rocks.

ALL-STAR SUB Dash All-Star Chris Bassitt was scheduled to start in this afternoon's first half finale. However, because the game does not have any playoff ramifications, Jason Van Skike will slide into the starting spot so that Bassitt can pitch in the first All-Star Game of his professional career. As a starter, Van Skike has a 3.97 ERA in four outings.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES On this day last year, Winston-Salem clinched the first half Southern Division championship by defeating the Blue Rocks 9-5 inside Frawley Stadium. The Dash, who posted a 44-25-1 record prior to the 2012 All-Star Break, outlasted the Salem Red Sox (41-28-1) for the first half crown. With that victory, Winston had collected a first half title for the third time in four seasons. Thus, this season is just the second time in the five years of the Dash era that Winston-Salem has not clinched a playoff berth in June.

CURLEY GETS HITS Thanks to his 0-for-4 effort Saturday, infielder Chris Curley could not extend his hitting streak beyond nine games. During this run, Curley posted a .385 average (15-for-39) with three homers and eight RBIs. Curley's hitting streak, though it was a personal season high, is just the fifth-longest by a Dash hitter on the campaign. Winston leads the CL with four individual hitting streaks of 10 or more games.

MIDSUMMER CLASSIC ON THE HORIZON Following the first half finale this afternoon, four Winston-Salem All-Stars will head to San Jose, Calif., for the 2013 California-Carolina League All-Star Game. Right-handers Chris Bassitt and Chris Beck will join infielders Chris Curley and Jeremy Farrell as the Carolina League squad aims to make it two straight wins over their friends from the West Coast. A year ago, the home team cruised to a 9-1 victory at BB&T Ballpark. First pitch for the Midsummer Classic is scheduled for 10:35 p.m. EST on Tuesday.

DASH DOTS Courtney Hawkins scored both of the Dash's runs in Saturday's loss...He also stole two bases for the first time in his minor league career...Myles Jaye did not allow a hit from the fourth inning on during his seven-frame effort, which matched his longest outing as a Winston-Salem starter...The Dash open the second half of the season Friday night at 7:05 in Lynchburg.
