Birmingham Barons News Release
A day after clinching the Southern League North Division Championship, the Barons gave a preview of the effort fans can expect from the team in the second half of the season pounding out 13 hits including four home runs in a 10-0 blowout of the Jacksonville Suns in front of 5,507 fans at Regions Field.
Trayce Thompson put the Barons up 2-0 in the first with a two-run shot into the Suns bullpen. The home run tied him with Andy Wilkins for the team-lead in home runs with seven. An inning later, Cody Puckett launched a mammoth two-run home run that put a hole in the letter 'E' atop the Regions Field videoboard to give the Barons a 4-0 lead. Puckett has hit four of his six home runs this season against the Suns.
The Barons would score four more runs over the next two innings on a Tyler Saladino RBI triple off the wall in centerfield, a two-run single by Andy Wilkins and an RBI double by Dan Black, giving the Baron an 8-0 lead after four innings.
Starter Erik Johnson (7-2, 2.37) allowed just four walks over five scoreless and hitless innings while striking out five but was removed prior to the 6th because of a high pitch count.
Santos Rodriguez relieved Johnson and allowed a hit to the first batter he faced but settled in to throw 2.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
Back-to-back homers by Andy Wilkins (8) and Dan Black (7) put the Barons up 10-0 after 6.0 innings and the Barons cruised from there to their 5th series victory in six tries at Regions Field. On the season the Barons are a Southern League best 41-24 including a 21-9 mark at home.
Dan Black finished 3-for-4 on the night with two runs scored and two RBI while Wilkins finished with three RBI.
The shutout was the eighth of the season for the Barons pitching staff, tied with Mississippi and Chattanooga for the most in the Southern League so far this season.
The Barons will have the day off on Wednesday before welcoming the Jackson Generals to Regions Field for five-game series to end the first half of the season. In game one, the Barons will send LHP Scott Snodgress (7-4, 4.54) to the hill against LHP Roenis Elias (2-6, 3.09). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
