Inland Empire 66ers News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Few plays are more exciting in sports than a play at the plate, therefore it will be hard to top Monday night's finish where Inland Empire 66ers (29-28) centerfielder Andy Workman threw out a Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (27-30) runner trying to tie the score in the 9th to end the game with a 4-3 Inland Empire win. Workman and rehabbing Angels outfielder Peter Bourjos combined for several game changing plays, including an RBI triple for Bourjos.

Still licking their wounds from a four game losing streak, the 66ers handed the ball to Orangel Arenas looking for a quality start and that is exactly what they got. In his return to Rancho Cucamonga, where Arenas played in 2010, the right-hander allowed just two runs in six innings, allowing the 66ers to stay in the game. Keeping Arenas in line for a quality start was center fielder Peter Bourjos who made five catches in five innings in the outfield, including a sprinting catch onto the warning track to rob a Quakes hitter of extra bases.

Offensively Inland Empire started the night with a double from Michael Snyder, which extended his hit streak to 12 games, and another from Abel Baker with two outs in the 2nd to give the 66ers a 1-0 lead. Later, down a run, Peter Bourjos crushed a triple to the wall in left-center field to score Brennan Gowens and tie the game. Bourjos ended his first night of his rehab assignment 1-for-3 with the run batted in.

With the game still tied in the 8th two more 66ers hitters extended their hit streaks. Eric Stamets singled to reach 10 straight games with at least one hit, and Alex Yarbrough followed with his third hit of the game, extending his hit streak to 11. That set the table for Zach Borenstein who doubled down the left field line to give Inland Empire a 4-2 lead. The lead dropped to one in the 9th and the Quakes had the tying run at 3rd with one out when Andy Workman made the catch and throw from centerfield to Abel Baker who applied the tag that ended one of the most exciting games of the season for the 66ers.

Inland Empire will attempt an encore of Monday's magnificent finish on Tuesday at Rancho Cucamonga with rehabbing Halo Peter Bourjos scheduled to start again for the 66ers. Inland Empire's next home game will be June 6th when the 66ers host the High Desert Mavericks for Thirsty Thursday presented by Hangar 24.
