SAUGET, Ill. - Gateway Grizzlies outfielder Jet Butler went 3-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored Friday night at GCS Ballpark. The Grizzlies beat the Schaumburg Boomers 8-6, and are now tied with Normal for first place in the West Division.

Three other Grizzlies (5-2) joined Butler with multi-hit games. Second baseman Jonathan Johnson, first baseman Jon Myers and shortstop Vladimir Frias each had two hits.

Schaumburg (5-3) took a lead early. Designated hitter Steve McQuail hit a second inning home run making it 1-0 Boomers.

That lead was short lived though. Frias put Gateway up 3-1 in the bottom of the inning with a three run homer. Gateway would not trail again.

Second year Grizzlie Ja'Vaun West (1-0) gave up three runs on five hits in five innings pitched. The loss went to Schaumburg starter Cody Griebling (0-1). He lasted four innings and gave up seven runs. Four of them were earned on eight hits.

The Grizzlies led 8-6 when Zac Treece entered the game in the eighth. He pitched a one-two-three inning. Closer Richard Barrett pitched the ninth and got his third save of the season.

Gateway continues their three game series at GCS Ballpark against the Schaumburg Boomers at 7:05 P.M. Saturday. For tickets call 618-337-3000 or visit www.gatewaygrizzlies.com.
