
Seven-Run Inning Lifts Shorebirds to 10-4 Win

Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds (21-24) scored seven runs in the fourth inning to cruise past the Greensboro Grasshoppers (18-25), 10-4, in game one of the series at New Bridge Bank Park on Thursday night. Rain started coming down in the top of the ninth inning and the teams were removed from the field with two outs in the inning. The game never resumed.
Greensboro jumped in front in the first inning. With two outs, Viosergy Rosa hit a two-run home run to right-center field.
The Shorebirds countered in the third. Adrian Marin led off with a single to left field. Then, on a hit and run, Lucas Herbst singled to right field. Marin advanced to third and then scored as the throw back to the infield by Jesus Solarzano bounced away from the second base bag. Two batters later, Tucker Nathans singled to deep right field to score Herbst.
The Shorebirds exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning. Greensboro starter Austin Brice walked the first two batters of the innings. With one out, Lucas Herbst hit a three-run homer to right field to put the Shorebirds on top 5-2. After a walk and a hit batter, Wynston Sawyer grounded a single into right field to score Roderick Bernadina. With two outs, Torsten Boss crushed a three-run homer to right field to stretch the lead to 9-2.
Shorebirds starter Juan Guzman earned his third win of the season over five innings. He yielded three hits and two runs, both in the first inning. Guzman retired nine of the final ten batters he faced.
Jose Nivar entered in the sixth inning and tossed scoreless innings before Greensboro scored two runs in the eighth. Yeison Hernandez reached on an error to open the inning. He advanced to third on a double by Michael Main. Then, Anthony Gomez grounded out to second and Hernandez scored. The next batter, Yordy Cabrera hit an RBI single to trim the gap to 9-4.
The Shorebirds tacked a run in the ninth inning. With two outs, Sawyer was hit by a pitch. Boss walked to put runners at first and second. Then, Hutter singled to right field to stretch the lead to 10-4. The teams were called off the field after the single by Hutter and the game never resumed.
Herbst anchored the offense with a 3-for-5 performance.
The Delmarva Shorebirds continue the series against Greensboro on Friday, May 24 at 7:05pm. RHP Brady Wager is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
