Winston-Salem Dash News Release

SALEM, VA (MAY 23, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash opened up their doubleheader with the Salem Red Sox by taking game one 7-4 and extending their winning streak to a season-high five games Thursday evening at LewisGale Field.

The Dash (23-21) wasted no time in jumping out in front as the first five hitters reached against starter Kyle Stroup (2-3). The frame began with a walk to Joey DeMichele before back-to-back singles by Grant Buckner and Chris Curley loaded the bases for Jeremy Farrell. Farrell hit a ground ball that Jose Garcia could not handle, and everybody was safe. Kevan Smith followed by lining a single to left to move everyone up again and double Winston's early edge.

One out later, Rangel Ravelo continued his torrid streak, driving in Curley with a run-producing single. The fourth and final tally of the frame came when Mark Tracy produced an RBI single of his own. In all, the Dash sent 10 men to the plate with five hits and four runs, the most they have scored in the first inning in any game this season.

Winston-Salem made it 5-0 on the first pitch of the third. Mark Haddow took the first pitch he saw from Stroup and launched it over the wall in left field for his third long ball of the campaign.

Salem (19-24) picked up its first run off Winston starter Chris Beck (3-6) in the third. Sean Coyle hit a solo home run, his 10th of the year to make it 5-1.

Beck gave up another run in the fifth but otherwise was very strong. The righty tossed six innings and ended his personal losing streak at five while tying Tuesday's winning pitcher Chris Bassitt for the team lead in quality starts with five.

The Dash plated two more runs off the Red Sox bullpen in the fourth when Smith drove in his second of the contest with a double, and Haddow brought him around with a single.

Salem did pick up two runs in the bottom of the seventh against right-handed reliever Brandon Hardin, but they were turned away as Yoandy Barroso tracked down a fly ball in deep center to preserve the win.

The Dash and Red Sox will wrap up their three-game series with the second game of the doubleheader at LewisGale Field. Winston-Salem right-hander Ryan Buch (2-6, 2.80 ERA) will face Salem righty Mike McCarthy (3-1, 3.35 ERA). First pitch for game two will be around 7:40 and can be heard on 600-AM WSJS in the Winston-Salem area.

The Dash's next homestand begins on Memorial Day, Monday May 27, as they open up a five-game series against the Frederick Keys. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
