Potomac Nationals News Release
Frederick, MD- The Potomac Nationals (23-22, 9-12) fell to the Frederick Keys (22-22, 10-12) on Thursday afternoon in the Game Two finale after being rained out last evening amidst "American History Day" at Harry Grove Stadium by the final score of 7-4 in a back-and-forth struggle.
The losing pitcher, RHP A.J. Cole (1-2), tossed 5.0 innings and surrendered five earned runs on seven hits while walking three batters and garnering five strikeouts. Cole served a two-run home run to the lumber of RF Brenden Webb in the contest.
The Nationals plated the first run of the game in the 3rd inning off LHP Tim Berry, who did not factor into the decision after putting 5.2 innings under his belt and allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits, with an RBI single placed over the head off SS Sammie Starr by RF Randolph Oduber.
The Keys quickly answered by producing two runs in the home half of the 4th frame via the aforementioned two-run missile off the bat of Webb that barely cleared the left center field and scraped some paint on the back of the first tier of signage.
The P-Nats yielded individual run tallies in the 5th and 6th stanzas to grab a 3-2 lead courtesy of a run-scoring groundout from 2B Adrian Sanchez and an RBI double by C Adrian Nieto blasted to the left center field gap to chase Berry from the game.
The fateful inning came in the 6th as Frederick pushed across four runs on three base hits to not only take the lead but create insurance as the Keys would be up 6-3 when the dust settled. 3B Travis Adair ripped a two-run double that just stayed fair along the right field line, CF Delvi Cid wrapped an RBI fielder's choice, and 2B Jerome Pena lined an RBI single in to center field.
Frederick added one more run in the 8th inning on a wild pitch from RHP Rob Wort, who made his 2013 P-Nats debut.
The Nationals brought home one run in the 9th frame on an RBI single blooped into left center which was too little too late.
The winning pitcher, LHP Trent Howard (3-0) got the final out in the 6th stanza, a strikeout of 1B Kevin Keyes relieving Berry and ended up motoring through 1.1 scoreless innings and he did not allow a base hit while fanning a pair.
Frederick RHP Jesse Beal (SV 1) got his first save of the season by slinging 2.0 innings and allowing one earned run on three hits.
Getaway day is this afternoon as the Nationals travel to Lynchburg, VA to take on the Lynchburg Hillcats (Atlanta Braves) in a three-game weekend series beginning tomorrow night with a 6:05pm first pitch.
The Nationals will send RHP Taylor Hill (4-1, 2.31) to clash with Lynchburg RHP Navery Moore (4-4, 5.94) in the series opener Friday evening.
