Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH- Akron's Carlos Moncrief and Cedric Hunter each went 2-4, with a three-run home run and double Thursday afternoon, as the Aeros defeated the Bowie Baysox, 11-5, at Canal Park.
Moncrief and Hunter each connected for three-run shots during a six-run rally in the seventh inning, as the Aeros put an emphatic end to a five-game losing streak. Hunter blasted his second home run of the season, while Moncrief hit his fifth. Both came off Bowie righthander Matt Bischoff.
Of Akron's 12 hits on the day, eight went for extra bases. Ronny Rodriguez, Jake Lowery and Jesus Aguilar all chipped in RBI doubles, while Jose Ramirez joined the hit parade with triple in the fifth inning.
The win salvaged a forgettable homestand for the Aeros (21-26). They won the opening game against Erie last Friday, then lost five straight games before winning the homestand finale.
Will Roberts (3-2) earned the win for Akron, hurling 5 2/3 innings and holding the hot-hitting Baysox to a pair of runs on Steven Bumbry's home run. Roberts walked one and struck out two. In his last four outings, Roberts has walked a total of three hitters.
Akron held a 4-2 lead after the top of the fifth when a rainstorm forced a one-hour delay. When play resumed, the Aeros extended the lead to 5-2, on Hunter's RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. Roberts returned to the mound in the sixth and recorded two outs before giving up a pair of singles. Righthander Bryan Price came in and retired Brandon Waring on a fly out to end the threat.
Bowie lefty Jake Pettit (2-1) suffered the loss, giving up four runs in four innings. He did not return to the mound after the rain delay.
The Aeros batted around in seventh against Bischoff, who walked three batters in the inning, two of which preceded Moncrief's homer. The six run outburst was the most runs scored in an inning by the Aeros this year.
The Baysox (22-22) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. They did rally with three runs in the eighth off Austin Adams to close the gap to 11-5, and what would a Bowie-Akron game be without a homer by Caleb Joseph? The Baysox slugger led off the eighth with a solo shot. It was his 10th of the year and sixth against the Aeros.
The game was played before 8,914 fans, the largest home crowd of the season.
The Aeros will hit the road for a weekend wrap-around series at Erie beginning on Friday night at 7:05. LHP Matt Packer (1-5, 3.83) will get the start for Akron, while the SeaWolves will counter with RHP Patrick Cooper (2-3, 5.02). The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
