Wet Weather Stops Baysox Sweep in Akron

Akron, Ohio - The Bowie Baysox (22-22) entered into Thursday afternoon's game with hopes of sweeping Akron (21-26), but were stopped short in an 11-5 loss that was aided by a six run Aeros seventh inning.

The wet day at Canal Park began with Akron starter Will Roberts making quick work of the Baysox first 3 batters Ty Kelly, Niuman Romero and Caleb Joseph.

In the bottom of the first Bowie's starter Jake Petit, would retire shortstop Jose Ramirez on a fly out. The second batter, Tyler Holt, reached base on a line drive single to center field. Holt went on to score one out later, after a double to right field by first baseman Jesus Aguilar.

Akron tacked on two more runs with two outs in the bottom of the second off of hits by Urshela, Lowery and Ramirez. Petit then picked off Ramirez at 1st base to end the inning, leaving the score 3-0 Akron.

Akron extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning after rightfielder Carlos Moncrief scored on a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Baysox finally began to come alive during the start of the fifth inning with a leadoff double by Brandon Waring. Steve Bumbry would make the score 4-2, after hitting a one out, two run homer to right center field.

Inclement weather during the middle of the fifth inning would result in a one hour delay of the game.

After play resumed in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Baysox made a pitching change, bringing in RHP Matt Bischoff. Bischoff gave up a triple during the first at bat to Ramirez, who went on to score one out later after a double by Cedric Hunter. The inning ended with Akron leading 5-2.

Henry Urrutia and Aaron Baker kept the Baysox alive in the 6th inning by reaching base on back-to-back two out singles. This resulted in a pitching change by Akron, bringing in RHP Bryan Price from the bullpen. Price went on to end the inning on a fly out by Waring to right field.

A two out, wild pitch by Price in the top of the seventh inning would advance Bumbry to third base. He then scored one out later after a Ty Kelly groundball single to center field. The side was soon retired with a strikeout by Niuman Romero, leaving the score 5-3 Akron.

Akron answered in the bottom of the inning with a one out, three run homerun by Hunter. Bischoff would go on to walk the next two Akron batters, bringing right fielder Carlos Moncrief to the plate. Another three run homerun by Moncreif gave the Aeros an 8 run lead and resulted in a pitching change for the Baysox. RHP Clay Schrader ended the inning with a fly out by Urshela, leaving the score 11-3 Akron.

Akron also made a pitching change in the top of the eighth, bringing in RHP Austin Adams to face the heart of the Baysox lineup. Leadoff batter Caleb Joseph began the inning with a solo homerun to left field. A two out triple by Garabez Rosa scored Urrutia from first base and reduced the deficit to 6 runs.

Schrader then helped the Baysox cause by going three up three down in the bottom of the eighth leaving the score, 11-5 Akron.

A two out double in the top of the ninth by Romero resulted in another pitching change for Akron. The Aeros then brought in RHP Jose Flores to face Joseph, who then flew out to right field for the game's final out: 11-5 Akron.

Akron starter Will Roberts (3-2) was awarded the win after giving up 2 earned runs off 6 hits through 5.2 innings pitched. J

Petit (2-1) was given the loss after pitching 4 innings with 4 earned runs off of 7 hits. Bischoff went 2.1 innings with 7 earned runs of off 5 hits and Schrader threw 1.2 scoreless innings with no hits.

RHP Devin Jones (2-2, 4.85) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team begins a four game home series with the Trenton Thunder. He will be opposed by RHP Zach Nundig (1-5, 3.28)

The Baysox return home Friday, May 24 to being a seven game home stand that runs through Thursday, May 30. Highlights include Bellies & Baseball Night and a Mystery Bobblehead Giveaway Friday, May 24 during a game at 7:05 p.m. and a Night at the Races Saturday, May 25 during the game at 6:35 p.m.
